Nigel Durham, the former drummer of the British heavy metal band Saxon, has died at the age of 61. The band confirmed his death on October 24, 2026. A cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.

Two years with Saxon, one album

Durham played drums for Saxon from 1987 to 1988. His time with the band produced one album credit that fixes his name in its recorded history: he appeared on Destiny, the album Saxon released in 1988, near the end of his short tenure in the drum seat.

A drummer rarely holds the public memory of a band, which usually belongs to singers and guitarists, but a recording lineup is set by the drum seat as much as by any other place in it. Durham's spell with Saxon lasted about a year, yet it covered a full album, and the band's own words this week treated him as one of its own. The Saxon band article on Wikipedia was updated to record that on 24 October 2026 it was announced that former drummer Nigel Durham had died, aged 61.

A career that stayed in the Saxon orbit

Durham's later work kept him close to musicians from his Saxon years. In 1999 he performed with Son of a Bitch, a group that featured former Saxon members Graham Oliver and Steve Dawson. That group became Oliver/Dawson Saxon, and Durham served as its drummer from 2000 to 2010, a run of ten years that lasted far longer than his original stay in Saxon itself.

He later played with Morpheus Rising from 2013 to 2016. That is the last band work listed in the reports of his death, which have rested on the band's announcement and the career outline it confirms.

The band's statement

Saxon announced the death in a statement on social media. "We are very sad to hear of the passing of a member of the Saxon family, former drummer Nigel Durham," the band said. "We send our love and thoughts to his wife Lauretta, daughter Gemma, his grandchildren, and family."

A false report earlier this year

The announcement also closes an odd and painful chapter. Earlier in 2026, a false report of Durham's death circulated online in April. Durham himself debunked it in a Facebook post on July 14, 2026, writing: "Don't know how this got started but I can assure everyone that I'm still alive & kickin. Lol."

Because of that earlier false report, this death notice rests on a firmer source than a circulating post. The October 24 announcement came from the band itself, and it was corroborated in reporting by Syracuse.com, which is the confirmation standard an obituary of this kind requires.
