A stand that changed the innings
New Zealand were 112 for 4 when Phillips and Michael Bracewell came together. Tim Seifert was out for 3, Finn Allen for 31, Daryl Mitchell for 24 and Bevon Jacobs for 7. The innings was in danger of settling for a much smaller total.
Phillips and Bracewell then put on 115 runs for the fifth wicket off 40 balls. Bracewell scored 65 off 25 balls, at a strike rate of 260.00, the best T20I score of his career. By the time the stand ended, New Zealand were heading for a total that India could not chase.
Bracewell praised Phillips afterwards, in comments reported by IANS under the headline line, "It's privilege to watch Phillips." Phillips now has 276 runs in four innings in this series, including 82 not out in the first T20I and 107 in the fourth.
A record total against India
The 259 for 7 is the highest T20I total ever conceded by India. It passed England's 257 for 3 at Southampton on July 11 this year. It is also the highest T20I score at Eden Park. SportsTak reported that it is also New Zealand's highest T20I score, passing their 254 for 5 against Scotland in 2022.
India captain Shreyas Iyer had won the toss and chose to field. Mayank Yadav was India's leading bowler with three wickets. Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Axar Patel took one wicket each, on a day when the bowling figures told the story of the Phillips and Bracewell stand.
Series still with India
India had won the first three matches of the five match series, chasing 198, 180 and 225. This win keeps the series alive at 3-1 to India. The fifth and final T20I is on November 1 in Hamilton.
For India, the chase never got close enough to test the total. They lost wickets through the innings and closed on 172 for 9, 87 runs short. For New Zealand, the value is clear. They have a win in the series, a record total at their most famous short boundary ground, and a middle order pair who took a game away from India in 40 balls.
