Graphika Finds China-Linked Spamouflage Accounts Posing as US Voters on X Days Before the Midterms

Key points

  • Some of the American voters arguing about the midterms on X may not be American voters at all.
  • Graphika said the activity closely resembles the tactics it documented ahead of the 2024 presidential election in a report called The #Americans.
  • The first set is a single account, @speedysmm4547, with 13,700 followers.

Some of the American voters arguing about the midterms on X may not be American voters at all. In a blog post on Friday, October 30, Graphika, a New York firm that tracks online networks, said it had identified three sets of accounts linked to Spamouflage, a long running influence operation it associates with China, posting divisive content about US politics, social issues and the elections. The Associated Press reported the findings ahead of the midterm elections on Tuesday, November 3, when 35 Senate seats and all House seats are on the ballot.

Graphika said the activity closely resembles the tactics it documented ahead of the 2024 presidential election in a report called The #Americans. The accounts post across the political spectrum, Graphika said, and they frequently question election integrity and the legitimacy of US democracy.

Three sets of accounts

The first set is a single account, @speedysmm4547, with 13,700 followers. Graphika assesses that it is the successor to a removed account previously linked to Spamouflage. The account had been dormant from 2012 until June 2025, Graphika said. Since then it has posted and amplified divisive US political content, including attacks on Democratic Party leadership during the October 2025 government shutdown and criticism of immigration policy.

The second set is a small network of four accounts with Spamouflage histories that now amplify @JosiTaylorah, a MAGA styled persona with 14,700 followers. The persona now focuses on divisive social issues and economic developments, including mass shootings, immigration and election integrity, Graphika said. One of the amplifying accounts posted Spamouflage graphics targeting the Falun Gong spiritual group and Chinese dissident Guo Wengui in 2023 and 2024, before it began boosting the persona.

The third set centers on Coolture, @cooltureph_, which presents itself as a Philippine culture blog. As of October 30 it had 201,600 followers. The account posted about Philippine food, culture and lifestyle until 2022, went dormant in August 2022, and resumed posting on November 30, 2024 with pro-China content in English, Graphika said. In 2025 it shifted almost entirely to US focused content, posed as an American voter, and used an AI generated video to argue that the United States is an oligarchy rather than a democracy. Graphika said it found no open source evidence to determine whether the account was hijacked or whether the original operator sold or otherwise lost control of it.

The tells the researchers cite

Posts and replies in all three sets contain full width punctuation, a detail Graphika says is consistent with operators typing English on Chinese language keyboards. Most engagement with the posts comes from accounts inside each small network rather than from ordinary users, Graphika said.

Denial, and a warning about impact

Liu Chang, a spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Washington, said in a statement that China "has never and will never interfere in the U.S. elections."

Darren Linvill, co-director of the Media Forensics Hub at Clemson University, told the Associated Press that Spamouflage is "famously bad at mimicking real Americans" and that there is "no chance it tips the balance in any real political conversation." Analysts told AP the operation appears aimed at wearing down trust in voting and in US institutions, rather than at backing one candidate. Graphika's report does not establish that the accounts changed any voter's behavior.
