NAIROBI. A building on Moi Avenue in central Nairobi collapsed on Friday night, Oct 16, 2026, while demolition work was under way. Four people were injured, a Nairobi County official said.
The building once housed Club Avenida, a well known night spot on one of the busiest streets in the city centre. It stood next to Union Towers, opposite the Mangereza DT Sacco building.
What the county says
Geoffrey Mosiria, the Nairobi City County chief officer for citizen engagement and customer service, confirmed the collapse in a statement posted on X in the early hours of Saturday, Oct 17, 2026. He put the injury count at four. His statement gave no names and no detail on how badly the four were hurt.
Mosiria said the late hour likely saved lives. Moi Avenue carries heavy foot and vehicle traffic during the day. At night the street was quiet, and few people were near the building when it came down.
Local reports said the injured were taken to hospital. Early reports from the scene raised fears that people might be trapped under the rubble, and police and emergency teams went to the site. The county statement listed the four injured as the only casualties it reported, and it did not confirm that anyone was trapped.
Questions for the demolition
Mosiria called for a full investigation. He asked county engineers to establish why the structure gave way and whether the demolition followed the required safety standards.
His statement raised three specific points for investigators: whether qualified experts supervised the work, whether the demolition had all the approvals it needed, and whether safety rules were followed on site.
Reports from the area said the building had been marked for demolition in recent days. Photos and video shared online on Friday night showed piles of debris on the street, emergency vehicles with lights flashing, and officers holding people back from the site. Members of the public were told to stay clear so rescue teams could work.
A main street in the city centre
Moi Avenue runs through the heart of Nairobi's central business district, past shops, offices, hotels and busy bus stops. A collapse there during the day would have put far more people at risk.
Demolition work in the district often runs at night to limit disruption to traffic and trade. Friday's collapse is likely to sharpen questions about how such work is planned and supervised when it happens next to open streets and occupied buildings.
County officials had not released the names of the injured or the findings of any first inspection by Saturday morning. The Orbit Post will update this story when the county publishes the results of its investigation.
