India's Ministry of Defence signed contracts worth Rs 53,866.50 crore on Monday, November 2, 2026, for eight Next Generation Corvettes for the Indian Navy. The contracts went to Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited, known as GRSE, and Goa Shipyard Limited, known as GSL.
GRSE, which is based in Kolkata, will construct five of the corvettes. GSL will construct the remaining three. In dollar terms, the deal is worth about $5.6 billion.
The contracts were signed at Kartavya Bhawan-2 in New Delhi. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh was present, along with senior officials from the ministry and the two shipyards. The signing followed approval by the Cabinet Committee on Security.
A first for Indian warship building
The project is the first in which the warships are indigenously designed by the Indian Navy and constructed by Defence Public Sector Undertakings selected through a competitive process.
In plain terms, the navy designed the ships itself, and the yards that will build them won the work through competition rather than by direct award. Both builders are Defence Public Sector Undertakings.
The programme supports the government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India push. The ministry said the work promotes indigenous materials, equipment and technologies in defence manufacturing.
What the ships will carry
The corvettes will carry advanced missiles, weapons and sensor suites. The ministry said those systems will let the ships carry out missions across the air, surface and sub-surface domains.
That means the same class of ship is meant to watch and act above the water, on the surface and below it. The reports carried no full list of the weapons and sensors fitted to the class, and no delivery date for the first ship has been announced.
Readers should note what this signing is and what it is not. It is a construction contract for eight ships that are not yet built. It is not a launch, a delivery or a commissioning, and the new corvettes will not join the fleet until the yards complete them.
Jobs over the next ten years
Construction is expected to generate about 72 lakh person-days of employment at the shipyards. Another 460 lakh person-days are expected in ancillary industries and small and medium firms that supply the yards.
Together that is 532 lakh person-days over the next 10 years. Most of the wider employment sits outside the two yards themselves, in the supply chain of firms that make the materials, equipment and parts the ships need.
The split of the order keeps work in two places at once. Five ships go to GRSE in Kolkata in the east, and three go to GSL in Goa in the west, so two yards will build the same class in parallel over the coming years.
No delivery date for the first ship has been announced in the reports. The next facts to watch are the construction start at each yard and any delivery schedule the ministry or the shipyards publish as the programme moves from contract to steel.
