Film director Michael Mann, 83, accidentally shot himself in the leg on Saturday, October 31, while holstering a firearm during target practice at a Los Angeles gun range. He was taken to a hospital, treated, and was being released, according to a statement from his representative.

The incident happened at about 4 p.m. local time at The Range LA, an indoor range on the Westside of Los Angeles. Variety reported the details of the accident and confirmed the hospitalization with the Los Angeles Police Department. Mann was in stable condition at the time of that call, the department told Variety.

What police said

The Los Angeles Police Department gave a fuller account in a statement reported by People and Parade. Officers responded at about 4 p.m. on Saturday to the 11000 block of Missouri Avenue after a radio call for shots fired at that location. The department said the responding units investigated, determined the shooting was accidental, and recorded that the subject was transported to a local hospital in stable condition. An injury report was completed.

The police statement did not name Mann. It described the subject of the call without identifying him, and it gave the block, the time, and the finding that the shooting was accidental. The identification of Mann as the injured man came from Variety and from his own representatives.

What his representatives said

A representative for Mann gave a short statement that was reported by TV Insider. "On Saturday, at a gun range, a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered, resulting in a superficial injury to film director Michael Mann. He was treated and is being released," the representative said.

His representatives also described the wound as subcutaneous and minor. The A.V. Club, citing his representatives via Variety, reported that Mann is an experienced shooter with years of practice. No report in the sources for this story said anyone else was injured, and no report described the injury as life threatening.

Heat 2 is still set for January, a source says

Mann is working on Heat 2. A source close to the director told Deadline that the injury will have no impact on the start of production, which is scheduled to begin filming in January. That account was reported by Parade.

Variety, as reported by TV Insider, said the expected cast for Heat 2 includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale, and Adam Driver. The film follows Heat, the 1995 crime film that remains the work most closely linked to Mann's name.

Mann is a four-time Academy Award nominee. The Times noted his directing work on Heat, The Insider, and The Last of the Mohicans in its report on the accident. Those films span the crime, newsroom, and historical subjects he has returned to across his career, and they are the titles the reports on Saturday's accident used to place him for readers.

Reports of the accident appeared on Sunday, November 1. The A.V. Club and TV Insider said TMZ was first to report the news that day. By Sunday, Variety had confirmed the hospitalization with Los Angeles police, the representative had said Mann was treated and being released, and the Deadline source had addressed the one production question the accident raised, the January start for Heat 2.
