A man was arrested on Friday, October 30, after Louisville fire officials said he admitted setting a fire that damaged an occupied apartment building in the Clifton Heights neighborhood and displaced one resident.

Darryl Foster, 26, is charged with first degree arson and wanton endangerment, Louisville Fire Department officials confirmed in a release on Friday. He was being held at Louisville Metro Department of Corrections, according to the Courier Journal, which cited an online custody search. An arrest citation for Foster was not immediately available, WDRB and WAVE reported.

The overnight fire on Brownsboro Road

The Louisville Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire in the 2000 block of Brownsboro Road at about 2:28 a.m. on Friday, department spokesperson Jelen Greene said in an initial release reported by the Courier Journal. Crews found fire inside an occupied apartment building and began what Greene called an aggressive interior fire attack.

The fire was brought under control at 3:10 a.m., the department said. WDRB and WAVE reported that 25 firefighters worked at the scene and that it took 42 minutes to bring the fire under control. The department told the station the fire was contained to the one building and damage to other buildings was limited.

No injuries were reported. One resident was displaced and was relocated within the apartment complex, officials said.

Arson ruling and the arrest

In a later email, Greene said the Louisville Metro Arson Bureau determined the cause of the fire was intentional. Major Jason Sanders of the Arson Bureau told WDRB and WAVE that Foster admitted to setting the fire.

According to the fire department release reported by the Courier Journal, the fire caused significant damage to six apartments. The release did not describe how the fire started inside the building, and officials have not said what led investigators to Foster beyond his reported admission.

The arrest leaves one resident rehoused inside the same complex while crews assess the damaged units. Court dates for Foster had not been published in the reports available on Friday afternoon, and the Arson Bureau investigation remains the public source for any further findings.

For neighbors in the Clifton Heights building, the immediate questions are practical ones. Officials have said only that the displaced resident was moved within the complex, and they have not published a list of the damaged units or a dollar estimate for the damage to the six apartments described in the release. The fire department has also not said when residents of the other units will be able to return, and that information will have to come from the department or the Arson Bureau as the assessment continues.
