The New York Knicks beat the Chicago Bulls 135-105 at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night, scoring 84 points in the first half to tie a franchise record and running away with the game before halftime. Jalen Brunson scored 33 points in 28 minutes, with 22 of them in a first quarter that he outscored Chicago by himself.
New York opened the game 43-21 in the first quarter. Brunson shot 10 of 17 from the field, 5 of 10 from three-point range and 8 of 9 from the line, with four assists and a plus-33 rating, according to the SportsFBI recap and the Sportradar box score. The Knicks added 41 more points in the second quarter for an 84-52 halftime lead. Bleacher Nation reported that the 84 points tied the franchise record for a half and that Chicago missed 20 straight three-pointers during the run.
Chicago never recovered
The lead reached 44 points in the third quarter, at 111-67 with 3 minutes and 23 seconds left in the period. New York eased off in the fourth and still won by 30. Chicago has now lost seven games this season and, according to Bleacher Nation, sits tied for the worst record in the league. The Knicks improved to 3-4 with the win.
The quarter scores tell the story. Chicago lost the first quarter by 22, the second by 10, the third by 2, and won a fourth quarter that no longer mattered. New York shot 44 of 87 from the field as a team and made 30 of 37 free throws, per the ESPN box score carried by Sportswire.
It was the second time in eight days that Brunson has taken over a game against Chicago. On October 28, in Chicago, he scored 38 points in a 133-127 Knicks win, a game New York had to take over late. Wednesday's version needed no comeback. The Knicks led by 22 after one quarter, by 32 at the half and by 44 in the third, and Brunson watched the bench finish the job.
Why it matters
The Knicks needed a night like this. A 3-4 start is still a losing record, and one home rout does not fix it, but Brunson scoring 22 in a quarter while resting most of the fourth is the version of this team its fans expected. For Chicago, the concern runs the other way: a defense that gives up 84 in a half, and a losing record at the bottom of the league, with the season barely a week old.
