North Korean state media published photographs on Monday showing Kim Jong Un touring a garment and footwear exhibition, hours after social media posts claimed the 42 year old leader had died from a brain hemorrhage.

The Korean Central News Agency said Kim toured the 2026 National Garment and Footwear Exhibition on Monday. Yonhap reported that his wife, Ri Sol Ju, and his daughter, Ju Ae, went with him, and that the show held more than 70,700 items of clothing of over 30 types and more than 170,000 pairs of shoes of over 60 kinds, made at light industry factories across the country. KCNA said Kim called the products a clear demonstration that his regional development policy is working.

In the photographs, Kim bends down to look at a small pink children's shoe, gestures while talking to officials, and touches the sleeve of a coat on a mannequin. The photographs have not been independently authenticated, and it is not clear exactly when they were taken.

Where the rumor came from

The claims started on Sunday with posts on X by Wanjun Xie, a US based Chinese dissident associated with the China Democracy Party. Xie claimed Kim had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage on Saturday, fallen into a coma, been taken to Beijing for treatment and died. A later post claimed China had sent 9,000 troops to Pyongyang to manage a succession crisis, and that specialists from Peking Union Medical College Hospital had been flown in to treat Kim.

None of those claims came with medical records, photographs, named witnesses or any other checkable evidence. The posts still spread widely and were picked up by tabloid outlets abroad, which described them as unverified speculation.

What is actually verified

Neither Pyongyang nor Beijing has confirmed any medical emergency. No hospital record, intelligence assessment or independent reporting supports the death claim. South Korea's National Intelligence Service told lawmakers on September 30 that Kim weighed about 140 kilograms and showed no notable health problems.

Before Monday, Kim's last reported public appearance was the opening of the National Defense Revolution Museum between October 11 and 13. That week long gap, in a country that releases almost no information about its leader's health, is what gave the rumor room to run. Similar death rumors spread in 2020 after Kim stayed out of public view for weeks, and they ended when state media published photographs of him at a factory opening.

For now, the only hard fact is the photo release itself. Pyongyang has not mentioned the rumors, and analysts who track North Korea say the next signal to watch is whether Kim keeps appearing in state media on the normal schedule.
