India finished the Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya with 114 medals, the country's best total at the event, and fourth place in the standings. The final count was 30 gold, 35 silver and 49 bronze. It passed the previous best of 108 medals, including 27 gold, set at Hangzhou in 2023. India crossed 100 medals for the second straight edition, and did it with a contingent of 168 athletes, far smaller than the team sent to Hangzhou.
China topped the table with 435 medals, including 207 gold. Hosts Japan were second with 186 medals, and Uzbekistan third with 145. South Korea finished fifth with 100 medals and 29 gold, one gold behind India, which kept the fourth place finish in doubt until the final day.
Para athletics carried the campaign. Indian athletes won 65 medals on the track and in the field, with 22 gold, 19 silver and 24 bronze. Para badminton added 16 medals, three of them gold. Para swimming won 11 medals, three silver and eight bronze. Para archery won six medals including three gold, and shooting won five, with two gold. Table tennis added seven bronze medals, powerlifting two silver, and judo one silver and one bronze.
Names behind the numbers
Sumit Antil defended his javelin title, the result Indian fans expected most and the one that set the tone in the first days. Simran Sharma set Games records in the women's 100 metres and 200 metres in the T12 class. Mona Agarwal won gold in the women's 50 metre rifle three positions SH1 with a score of 357.5, a world record and a Games record, and became the first Indian para shooter to win a medal in that event at the Asian Para Games. Himanshu Nandal won three bronze medals in the pool, including the men's 100 metre freestyle S11 in 1 minute 5.90 seconds. At the other end of the age range, Jehan Dorab Madan won a table tennis bronze in men's doubles class MD4 with Shubham Wadhwa at fifty years old, the oldest member of the Indian team to win a medal at these Games.
Modi leads the response
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the team on Sunday in a post on X. "What an extraordinary achievement by our para-athletes at the just-concluded Asian Para Games 2026! With a record 114 medals, this marks India's best-ever performance at the Games," he wrote. "This is an occasion of immense pride and joy for the entire nation! I congratulate every member of our contingent for their exceptional determination." The athletes received a grand welcome at Delhi airport when they returned home.
Why it matters
The trend line matters more than one total. India won 14 medals at the first Asian Para Games and has now finished fourth with 114, improving at every edition in between. The medals also spread wider this time. Eight sports produced medals, and the biggest single block, athletics, supplied just over half rather than almost all of them. The gap to third place is still large. Uzbekistan finished 31 medals ahead, and China finished in another league altogether. Closing that gap needs depth in swimming and team sports, where India remains thin. For now, the Nagoya result gives Indian para sport its strongest base yet, two years out from the next Paralympic cycle's main tests.
