India Core Sector Grows 7.9 Percent in September, 30 Month High
Iron ore, electricity and coal led a broad rise in core output, while fertilizers fell for a seventh straight month ahead of factory data on October 28.
Key points
- India's core industries grew 7.9 percent in September 2026 from a year earlier, the fastest pace in the new series and a 30 month high, official data released on Wednesday showed.
- The Commerce and Industry Ministry said the core sector index stood at 118.3 in September, up from 109.6 a year earlier.
- Iron ore led the table with growth of 18.4 percent.
India's core industries grew 7.9 percent in September 2026 from a year earlier, the fastest pace in the new series and a 30 month high, official data released on Wednesday showed. The result beat August by a wide margin and pointed to strong output across mining, power and construction inputs at the start of the festive quarter.
The Commerce and Industry Ministry said the core sector index stood at 118.3 in September, up from 109.6 a year earlier. Growth in September last year was 3.1 percent. August growth was revised up to 5.9 percent from a first estimate of 4.8 percent, so September built on a stronger base than first reported.
Where the growth came from
Iron ore led the table with growth of 18.4 percent. Electricity output rose 11.4 percent, coal rose 10.7 percent, refinery products rose 10.3 percent and cement rose 9.8 percent. Steel grew 4.9 percent. Six of the nine industries in the series expanded, and five of them grew at close to 10 percent or more.
The weak spots were clear too. Fertilizer output fell 11.7 percent, the seventh straight month of decline. Natural gas fell 4.6 percent and crude oil fell 1.4 percent. The falls show that farm inputs and domestic oil and gas output did not share in the September surge.
Aditi Nayar, chief economist at ICRA, called the uptick broad based. She said a low base helped coal and iron ore, and she noted that refinery products growth hit a series high. That mix matters. Part of the headline number reflects easy comparisons with a soft month last year, and part reflects real strength in power, mining and refining.
The half year picture
For April to September, the first half of the fiscal year, cumulative core sector growth reached 5.1 percent. A year earlier the same period grew 2.5 percent. The gap shows the pickup is not a one month story, even if September itself was flattered by the base.
The series now covers nine industries, with iron ore added to the older list of coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertilizers, steel, cement and electricity. Together these industries carry heavy weight in the wider index of industrial production, so a strong core reading often points to a strong factory reading. It does not guarantee one.
Why it matters
Core output tracks the inputs that factories, builders and power plants use every day. More coal, more power and more cement point to busy construction sites and steady demand for energy. More refinery output points to strong fuel processing, for home use and for export. When those lines rise together, hiring, freight and tax receipts often follow.
The fertilizer slump cuts the other way. Seven straight months of decline raise questions about supply for farmers ahead of the winter crop season, and weak crude and gas output keeps India dependent on imports for energy.
What happens next
The test comes on October 28, when the government releases overall industrial production data. Experts are divided on whether the core surge will carry into that wider number. The core index covers a large share of industrial output, but consumer goods and other factory lines can move on their own path. If industrial production confirms the core strength, economists will read September as a real step up. If it does not, September will look like a mining and refining spike on a low base. Either way, the October 28 release is now the number to watch.
