Halloween lands on a Saturday this year, and by late afternoon the first costumed kids will be out on the sidewalks with empty bags and big plans. What lands in those bags depends a lot on where the porch light is. A 2026 study from Innerbody ranked the most searched Halloween candy in every state, and the national winner is not a chocolate bar. It is Sour Patch Kids.

The national top five

Innerbody analyzed Google Trends search data from all 50 states and Washington, D.C., looking at 34 well known candies over the full year and again over a three week stretch in September 2026, as Halloween shopping picked up. In the Halloween period, the ten most searched candies in the country were:

1. Sour Patch Kids 2. Candy Corn 3. Snickers 4. Twix 5. Skittles 6. KitKat 7. Reese's 8. Starburst 9. Twizzlers 10. Nerds

Sour Patch Kids hold first place in both counts. They are also the most searched candy of the full year, ahead of Skittles and Snickers. Chocolate still fills half the top ten, but the top two spots belong to a sour gummy and the oldest Halloween argument in the candy aisle.

Candy corn gets its season

Candy corn is the climber of the list. Over the full year it ranks only eighth in searches, but in the weeks before Halloween it jumps to second place in the country, trailing only Sour Patch Kids. Ohio is one of four states where candy corn ranks first heading into Halloween, joined by Oregon, West Virginia and Wyoming, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported. Ohioans search for candy a lot in general. The state ranks ninth in the country for overall candy search interest. Its year round favorite is Skittles, which makes the Halloween switch to candy corn a purely seasonal move. People may argue about candy corn all October, but a lot of them are clearly looking for it.

Two New England states stand alone

The map gets its best stories at the edges. Rhode Island is the only state in the country with Lemonheads in the top spot for the Halloween period, The Providence Journal reported. It is a lonely pick. Over the full year, Lemonhead sits near the bottom of the national list. Rhode Islanders are not chasing it all year either. Their year round favorite is 3 Musketeers, a candy that tops the list in seven states. Rhode Island also ranks only 37th for overall candy search interest, so this is not a state that thinks about candy constantly. It just has one strong opinion in October.

Massachusetts has the same kind of lone streak, one state to the north. In the weeks before Halloween, the most searched candy in Massachusetts is Jolly Rancher, and it is the only state in the country with Jolly Rancher in the top spot, the Worcester Telegram and Gazette reported. For the rest of the year, Massachusetts goes back to Swedish Fish, its favorite in 2025 as well. The state ranks 39th for overall candy search interest. Two small states, two hard candies nobody else put first. The states that search the least still know exactly what they want.

Utah takes the sweet tooth title

The state that searches for candy the most is Utah, which ranks first for overall candy interest in 2026, ahead of Nebraska, Iowa and Kentucky. Ohio comes in ninth. At the other end, Rhode Island at 37th and Massachusetts at 39th show that a low overall ranking can still hide a very specific favorite. The study counts searches, not sales, so it shows what people were thinking about and planning to buy before tonight.

What it means for the bowl tonight

If you are the one handing out candy tonight, the map offers a simple lesson. A mixed bowl is the safe play: something sour, something chocolate, and a handful of candy corn for the kids who defend it like a family tradition. The searches say the sour gummies will go first. And if your street is in Rhode Island or Massachusetts, a bag of Lemonheads or Jolly Ranchers is not a gamble. It is the local favorite, and tonight the locals are coming to your door.
