Coventry City beat Sunderland 3-1 on Saturday to climb out of the Premier League relegation zone, while Bournemouth beat Leeds United 2-0 and Brentford beat Nottingham Forest 2-0 in a round of results that moved the bottom of the table.

Tatsuhiro Sakamoto put Coventry ahead in the 17th minute, Taiwo Awoniyi made it 2-0 in the 37th minute and Jack Rudoni added a third in the 52nd minute. Enzo Le Fee pulled one back for Sunderland from a penalty in the 67th minute. Sunderland defender Omar Alderete was sent off for a second yellow card in stoppage time. Frank Lampard's Coventry have now won three games and climb out of the drop zone. Sunderland stay bottom.

Lampard's Coventry take their chance

Coventry controlled the key moments. Sakamoto's early goal settled the home side, Awoniyi's second gave them room to breathe, and Rudoni's goal early in the second half left Sunderland chasing a game that was already slipping away. Le Fee's penalty gave the visitors a brief lift, but Alderete's late red card ended any real hope of a comeback.

For Sunderland, the problem is simple. They stay bottom and they gave away goals in each phase of the match: early, before half time and just after the break. A penalty alone was never going to be enough from that position.

Trafford error helps Bournemouth beat Leeds

Bournemouth beat Leeds 2-0, with Evanilson scoring in the 31st minute and Amine Adli adding the second in the fourth minute of added time, shown as 90+4. The opener turned on a Leeds error. Goalkeeper James Trafford played a short pass that went straight to Justin Kluivert, who squared the ball for Evanilson to score into an open net.

Leeds had an earlier moment go against them. Dominic Calvert-Lewin finished in the 11th minute, but the goal was ruled out by VAR for handball. From there, Bournemouth managed the game and Adli's late goal closed it out.

The numbers behind Bournemouth's run are strong. This was their third straight league win and their sixth win in all competitions, all without conceding a goal. They also move a point above Leeds, a direct swing against a side close to them in the table.

Thiago ends Brentford's winless run

Brentford beat Nottingham Forest 2-0 through a Nikola Milenkovic own goal in the 30th minute and an Igor Thiago strike in the 76th minute, set up by Jaidon Anthony. The win ends Brentford's four match winless run and came in the Gtech Community Stadium's 100th Premier League game.

Forest had chances and wasted them. Reports put their shot count between 12 and 15, and the clearest miss came in the 55th minute when Ryan Yates headed a clear chance over the bar. Twenty one minutes later Thiago scored on the counter attack and the game was gone.

Forest remain the league's lowest scorers with six goals. They were booed off by their supporters and the pressure grows on manager Oliver Glasner. Creating chances means little when a team scores this rarely, and Forest's finishing cost them again here.

Hull and Ipswich share four goals

Hull City drew 2-2 with Ipswich Town in the other match in this roundup. The goals came from Florentino Luis in the 22nd minute, Tim Iroegbunam in the 58th minute, Oli McBurnie in the 68th minute from a free kick and Julio Enciso in the 74th minute. Hull led for only six minutes across the match. Both clubs sit on 11 points, with Hull in 10th place.

What the results mean

Coventry's climb out of the relegation zone is the headline at the bottom. Sunderland stay bottom, Forest stay short of goals and Leeds slip a point behind Bournemouth. At this stage of the season, wins against direct rivals carry double weight, and Coventry, Bournemouth and Brentford all took theirs.
