Auston Matthews reached 800 career points in this game, and he reached the mark faster than any player in Toronto Maple Leafs history. Matthews recorded an assist on William Nylander's goal at 6:06 of the third period, the goal that brought Toronto within 3-2. It was Matthews' 800th point in his 703rd game, 39 games fewer than Darryl Sittler, who reached 800 points in 742 games on November 15, 1980. Matthews' career totals stand at 437 goals and 363 assists. NHL Public Relations noted the milestone on Monday night, and Sportsnet reported that Matthews passed Sittler's franchise record with the assist.
The Calgary Flames beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-2 at Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary on Monday night. Matvei Gridin scored two goals and added an assist for Calgary, which won its fourth straight game and swept its four game homestand.
Gridin opened the scoring 10:05 into the game, and captain Mikael Backlund added Calgary's second goal before the first period ended, which put the Flames up 2-0. Gridin scored again 25 seconds into the second period, on the power play and off a long stretch pass from Zayne Parekh, to make it 3-0. Toronto got one back in the second period through Easton Cowan, and William Nylander brought the Maple Leafs within a goal at 3-2, scoring 6:06 into the third period. Calgary closed the game out late. Joel Farabee scored into an empty net with 1:25 remaining, and Martin Pospisil added a second empty net goal with 39 seconds left.
Gridin and the returning captain drive the win
Gridin's two goals and one assist led the Calgary scoring. His second goal came 25 seconds after the second period started, off the stretch pass from Parekh, and it gave Calgary the three goal cushion it needed once Toronto pushed back in the third period.
Backlund scored Calgary's second goal in his first game back from a two game injury absence. The goal also moved the captain into a fifth place tie with Johnny Gaudreau for all time points as a Calgary Flame.
Farabee and Pospisil each finished with a goal and an assist. Matt Coronato and Simon Nemec added two assists each for the Flames, which spread the scoring across the lineup in a game they led from the first period on.
Cooley wins his fourth straight in the Calgary net
Calgary goaltender Devin Cooley made 26 saves and was credited with an assist. The win was his fourth straight victory.
Toronto goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky made 29 saves on 32 shots. The Maple Leafs also lost winger Kirill Marchenko, who left the game with a lower body injury after an awkward fall early in the second period and did not return in the coverage checked. No diagnosis or time out has been reported.
Records and a last visit to the Saddledome
Calgary improved to 5-6 with the win, and Toronto fell to 7-5. The game was also the Maple Leafs' final regular season appearance at the Scotiabank Saddledome, which gives the result a place in the building's history as well as in the standings.
Toronto leaves Calgary with the loss and with Marchenko's status open. Calgary leaves its own building with a four game win streak, a swept homestand, and its captain back in the lineup and scoring.
