Fed Decision and Cyclone Landfall Hit Wednesday, Oil at $115 Between Them

Key points

  • Wednesday is the day this week turns on.
  • The Federal Open Market Committee meets Tuesday and Wednesday.
  • That makes the statement, not the decision, the market event.

Wednesday is the day this week turns on. The Federal Reserve decides interest rates at 2 p.m. Eastern. Cyclone Arnab is forecast to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast the same morning, India time. Between those two events sits the price of oil, which settled Friday at $116.72 a barrel and eased to about $114 on Monday. Rates, weather and energy are usually separate stories. This week they land on the same households on the same day.

The Fed: a hold with a warning label

The Federal Open Market Committee meets Tuesday and Wednesday. Markets expect the Fed to hold rates at 3.75 to 4.00 percent. Pricing last week put the odds at about 83 percent for a hold and 17 percent for a hike, with December priced as the meeting where a hike becomes live. Chair Kevin Warsh holds a press conference after the decision.

That makes the statement, not the decision, the market event. A hold with language about energy prices feeding inflation points toward December. A hold that treats the oil spike as a supply shock to look through points the other way. Mortgage rates and credit card rates in the United States follow the signal, not the headline.

Wall Street goes into the week soft. The S&P 500 fell 0.52 percent on Friday to 7,623.68, its second straight weekly decline. The Dow fell 1.23 percent to 52,215.16. The 10-year Treasury yield closed at 5.00 percent, a level that keeps borrowing expensive across the economy.

Oil: the number between the two events

Brent settled at $116.72 on Friday after attacks on Saudi energy sites. On Monday it eased to about $114 to $115, after reports that Qatari mediators were in Tehran and that an immediate United States strike on Iran had been ruled out. Traders name $120 above and $108 below as the levels that change the story. Above $120, fuel inflation becomes the Fed's problem in public. Below $108, the spike starts to look like a scare that passed.

Crypto did little overnight. Bitcoin traded at about $82,200 on the wire price feed Monday, Ethereum at about $2,440 and Solana at about $105.40, all in a tight range while traders wait for Wednesday.

India: the week is already red

Indian shares opened the week under the same pressure. The Sensex fell 536 points in early trade Monday to 72,583.86, and the Nifty fell 200 points to 22,402.80. Infosys dropped 2.7 percent after cutting its fiscal 2027 revenue growth guidance to 1 to 2 percent, from 1.5 to 3 percent. Foreign investors had bought 887.65 crore rupees of Indian shares on Friday, which did not stop the slide. High oil hurts India twice: it raises the import bill and it weakens the rupee, making everything bought in dollars cost more.

The storm: Arnab reaches the coast Wednesday

Cyclone Arnab is forecast to cross the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam on Wednesday forenoon, with winds of 115 to 125 km/h gusting to 140. Red alerts cover six Andhra districts. Odisha has banned sea fishing and closed schools in six districts for October 28 and 29. Rain of more than 20 cm is forecast for several coastal districts on Tuesday and Wednesday. From Thursday, the same system is expected to bring heavy rain and snow to parts of Nepal.

For families on that coast, the Fed does not matter Wednesday. The storm does. For families in Ohio or Ontario, the storm is a headline and the Fed decides what their loans cost. The link between the two households is oil, and food and fuel prices that move with it.

Key numbers

  • 3.75 to 4.00 percent: the Fed rate markets expect to survive Wednesday
  • $116.72: Brent crude's Friday settlement, easing to about $114 Monday
  • 7,623.68: the S&P 500 close on Friday, down 0.52 percent, a second weekly decline
  • 536 points: the Sensex fall in early Monday trade, to 72,583.86
  • 115 to 125 km/h, gusting 140: Arnab's forecast winds at landfall Wednesday

What happens next

Watch the Fed statement's words on energy, not the rate itself. Watch whether Brent holds under $115 or breaks for $120. Watch Arnab's actual track against the forecast cone, because a landfall shift of one district changes the damage map. Later in the week, United States PCE inflation and GDP data test whether the Fed's caution was right. Wednesday answers the first three questions. The data answer the fourth.
