FALMOUTH, Massachusetts (Orbit Post) Heavy rain flooded roads across Falmouth on Friday afternoon, and Falmouth police urged residents to stay home and keep their cars out of the water.

The Falmouth Police Department reported multiple flooded roads throughout town in a social media post, the Cape Cod Times reported. Police listed the area around Main Street in front of Bank of America near Falmouth Lumber, and said Falmouth Heights Road, Grand Avenue and Menauhant Road were also flooded. Drivers, police said, should not attempt to drive through flooded areas and should find an alternate route.

Police urge residents to stay home

WCVB reported that Falmouth police urged residents to stay home amid the flooding and to avoid driving through water. Television pictures from Cape Cod on Friday afternoon showed trash bins floating through a flooded gas station lot, Boston 25 News reported at 3:42 p.m. EST. WHDH 7 News reported that nearly three inches of rain had fallen in Falmouth and that water covered the parking lot at Garrett's Family Market and gas station, with trash barrels floating in it.

The same storm floods Brockton

The storm hit inland towns as well. WHDH reported that several inches of standing water covered Westgate Drive in Brockton, where cones and blocked roads closed the street at both ends and people could only reach the Salvation Army Family Store by walking through the water.

Flood Watch through Saturday morning

The National Weather Service office in Boston and Norton kept a Flood Watch in effect from 4 a.m. Friday through Saturday morning for Barnstable, Dukes, Plymouth and Bristol counties in Massachusetts and for all of Rhode Island, including Providence. The watch, issued at 12:54 a.m. EST on Friday, said periods of heavy rain may produce an area of 2 to 4 inches of rain across Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts, with a low risk, less than 30 percent, of isolated amounts of 5 to 6 inches. The Weather Service said flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas, and that storm drains and ditches may become clogged with debris.

Falmouth sits on the southwestern corner of Cape Cod, where low roads along the shore and through the village center collect water quickly in a hard rain, and Friday's downpours arrived on top of a Flood Watch that forecasters had posted before dawn.

No injuries were reported in the local coverage of the Falmouth flooding on Friday evening. The rain was expected to continue into Friday night before tapering off early Saturday.
