PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island (Orbit Post) A 39-year-old man from Concord, New Hampshire died on Friday after his pickup rear-ended a vehicle on Interstate 95 in Providence and was pushed into the path of a tractor trailer, Rhode Island State Police said.

State police were called to the crash near the Barbara Leonard Way overpass at about 9:54 a.m. on Friday, November 6, state police Lt. Col. Erik Yanyar told the Providence Journal. WPRI 12 News also reported that a man died after a crash involving a tractor trailer on I-95 South in Providence on Friday, citing Rhode Island State Police.

What state police say happened

Investigators have determined, preliminarily, that the man who died was driving a Chevrolet Silverado pickup that rear-ended a vehicle traveling ahead of it, Yanyar said. The impact happened in the highway's left lane and pushed the pickup into the middle lane, where it was hit by the tractor trailer.

The pickup driver was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where he died from his injuries, Yanyar said. State police are withholding his name pending notification of his family. Police have not released the name because his relatives have not yet been told, and no name will be published here until officials release it.

No citations, investigation continues

State police have not issued any citations in the crash, and the investigation continues, Yanyar said. The Providence Journal report did not state what happened to the driver of the vehicle that was rear-ended or to the tractor trailer driver, and state police have not yet said whether speed, weather or any other factor played a role. Rain was moving across Rhode Island on Friday under a National Weather Service Flood Watch, but investigators have not linked the crash to the weather.

Interstate 95 is the main north to south highway through Providence, and the crash site near the Barbara Leonard Way overpass sits on the southbound side of the city stretch of the interstate, WPRI reported. Anyone driving the corridor on Friday faced a second planned disruption as well: the total weekend closure of I-195 in East Providence, starting Friday night for the Potter Street bridge demolition, was already in effect in Rhode Island Department of Transportation advisories.

State police have not given a time for their next update. The Journal reported that the investigation is active and that no charges or citations are pending at this stage.
