A 5-year-old child suffered life-threatening injuries and a 16-year-old was seriously hurt on Friday afternoon in Everett, Washington, in an incident involving an e-scooter and a vehicle on Center Road, the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office said.
What deputies found on Center Road
Deputies responded at about 2:22 p.m. on Friday, October 23, to the 600 block of Center Road in Everett. Two children had been riding an e-scooter. A vehicle traveling eastbound was also involved, and investigators believe the vehicle and the scooter collided and the vehicle flipped, KOMO News reported.
The 5-year-old, the 16-year-old and the driver of the vehicle were all taken to Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett for treatment. The younger child's injuries were described as life-threatening. The teenager's injuries were described as serious.
Two children who were inside the vehicle suffered minor injuries and were not taken to a hospital, KOMO reported. FOX 13 Seattle reported that the driver and the two children inside the vehicle were dealing with minor injuries.
What investigators have not confirmed
The sheriff's office said it had no reports of impairment. Investigators had not confirmed a collision because they had not yet spoken with the 16-year-old, KOMO reported. It was not clear whether the two children on the scooter are related, and officials had not said whether the teenager attends Mariner High School, which is close to the scene.
That caution matters for drivers and families in the area. The basic facts are settled, the time, the place, the ages and the hospital transports. How the scooter and the vehicle came together is not settled, and deputies have not released a cause.
Road closure and the investigation
Detectives with the sheriff's Collision Investigation Unit went to the scene to investigate. Center Road was expected to remain closed for several hours while investigators worked, the sheriff's office said.
Everett is the county seat of Snohomish County, north of Seattle. Center Road runs through a residential area near schools, and a closure there affects local traffic well beyond the single block where deputies responded.
No names were released. Officials have not released an update on the condition of either child on the scooter beyond the first descriptions from the sheriff's office. Anyone who saw the incident and has not spoken with deputies should contact the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office.
