What happened at Rochester

Ed Dawson, the head football coach at Cornell High School in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania, suffered a medical emergency during his team's game at Rochester High School in Beaver County on Friday night, October 23, WPXI reported. He was taken to a local hospital and later died. Cornell Superintendent Dr. Aaron Thomas announced the death in a statement carried by WPXI. The Beaver County Times reported the same outcome, citing WTAE, and PennLive carried the news statewide the same night.

The game was Cornell's Week 9 matchup against Rochester. Neither WPXI nor the Times gave a cause for the medical emergency, and no cause had been released in the first reports late Friday night. The reports also did not say at what point in the game the emergency happened.

The district responds

Thomas said the loss had shaken the whole school community in Coraopolis, a borough outside Pittsburgh in Allegheny County. "To say Coach Dawson was an integral part of Cornell School District would be an understatement," Thomas said in the statement reported by WPXI. "It is hard to put into words what Coach Dawson means to Cornell and we are all heartbroken, crushed, and in shock."

Thomas said the district's thoughts were with Dawson and his family, and he closed the statement with a direct line to the coach: "We love you, Coach Dawson." The district said support resources will be made available to students and staff as they deal with the loss in the days ahead.

The coach who rebuilt Cornell

Dawson took over the Cornell program in 2011, the Beaver County Times reported. After his first year, the roster got so small that Cornell formed a co-op with Quaker Valley, and Dawson spent that period as an assistant coach and as Cornell's link to the co-op program. He helped bring the Cornell program back in 2016, and the Raiders started to climb.

In 2019, Dawson led Cornell to its first conference championship in 36 years and a place in the WPIAL semifinals. The Times named him its high school football coach of the year for that season. In 2021, Cornell went 7-2 and won its first outright conference title in 38 seasons. His career record at Cornell was 49-54 across 12 seasons, the Times reported.

Before he coached, Dawson played the game at a high level in the same valley. He was a standout linebacker for Aliquippa's 1992 WPIAL and PIAA championship teams, the Times reported. The paper said his players responded to his energy, and that he got the most out of rosters that were often small.

What comes next for Cornell

The first reports late Friday did not say what the district plans for the rest of Cornell's season, and they did not name the hospital where Dawson was taken. What is clear from both accounts is the size of the loss for a small school. Cornell High School serves Coraopolis and Neville Township, and its football program exists in its current form largely because Dawson stayed through the co-op years and built it back.

For players who were on the field at Rochester on Friday night, the support the district promised will be the first step. The Beaver Valley football community, where Dawson played at Aliquippa and coached at Cornell, spent Friday night absorbing the same news.
