A fire tore through the Kehlsteinhaus, the mountain guest house known as the Eagle's Nest above Berchtesgaden in Bavaria, on Friday night, October 23, 2026. German police said they detained a suspect close to the scene as around 200 firefighters and emergency personnel battled the flames at the remote site. Police said there were no reports of injuries, and that the building was believed to have been empty when the fire broke out.
Dispatchers in Traunstein received the fire alarm at 9:15 p.m. local time on Friday, and the first crews reached the building at 9:52 p.m. to find a major fire already burning. DW reported that arriving firefighters found the structure completely ablaze, citing police spokeswoman Lisa Maier. The house stands at 1,834 meters on the Kehlstein peak near the Austrian border, and crews could work only in respiratory protective equipment. Difficult terrain slowed the response, and police said the fire was still burning in the early hours of Saturday, October 24.
A suspect held, a cause not yet known
Police said a suspicious person was taken into temporary custody near the site, and the criminal police opened an investigation into whether the detained person was connected to the fire. There was no immediate word on a possible motive, and police had not announced a cause. The German newspaper Bild reported that officers suspected arson and stopped a man on a motorcycle near the site as crews were heading up the mountain. Police statements reported by Reuters, CNN and the BBC did not confirm that account, and the investigation was still under way on Saturday morning.
A building built for Nazi leaders, kept as a warning
The Kehlsteinhaus was completed in 1938 as a guest house for Nazi officials and their guests, in a high Alpine setting above Berchtesgaden. It is separate from the Berghof, Adolf Hitler's nearby summer residence, which was destroyed in the war. The Eagle's Nest survived the war and has operated as a mountain inn since 1952, with an exhibition on its history. It is owned by the state of Bavaria and was classified after the war as a historical monument recalling the Nazi period. The site draws visitors from around the world each season, both for the view from the peak and for the history the building carries.
By Saturday morning, emergency services were still at the scene and the criminal investigation was continuing. Officials had not yet given an account of how much of the building the fire destroyed. The extent of the damage, and what it means for a monument the state has kept open as a place of remembrance, will turn on that assessment and on what investigators find about how the fire started.
