Deterministic won the $2 million Breeders' Cup Mile at Keeneland on Saturday, October 31, holding off the defending champion Notable Speech by three-quarters of a length in a finish that reversed the result of their meeting at Woodbine seven weeks earlier.

Jockey Kendrick Carmouche gave the 5-year-old what BloodHorse called a perfect stalking trip from the inside post, and Deterministic stayed on through the stretch to turn back Notable Speech's late charge. Lake Forest finished third in a field of 13. The final time on the firm turf was 1:34.52, and Deterministic paid $12.10 on a $2 win bet.

Revenge for Woodbine

Notable Speech had beaten Deterministic by a length and a quarter in the Woodbine Mile on September 12, a defeat that ended a six-race winning streak for the American horse. That streak included Grade 1 wins in the Manhattan Stakes and the Fourstardave Stakes, and his second straight Fourstardave victory at Saratoga on August 8 earned him his place in the Mile field.

Notable Speech arrived at Keeneland as a seven-time Grade 1 winner trying to win the Mile for the second straight year. He won the race at Del Mar in 2025, and a repeat win would have made him the sixth horse to win more than one Breeders' Cup Mile. His bid fell three-quarters of a length short.

A family stable's biggest day

Deterministic is trained by Miguel Clement and races for St. Elias Stable, Ken Langone, Steven Duncker and Vicarage Stable. He was bred in Kentucky by Hinkle Farms and is a son of Liam's Map, who won the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile in 2015. His owners bought him for $625,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale in 2022, on the same grounds where he won on Saturday.

The horse carries a family history. He was one of the last graded stakes winners trained by Christophe Clement, Miguel Clement's father, who died in May 2025. A few weeks after his father's death, Deterministic won the Manhattan and gave Miguel Clement the first Grade 1 victory of his career.

Clement had made his confidence plain before the race. "He is arguably considered the best turf horse in the country; he's the best North American-based horse," he told BloodHorse this week. Since his switch from dirt to turf in June 2024, Deterministic has finished in the first three in every start, and Saturday's win was the strongest proof yet of his trainer's claim.
