Heavy rain and thunderstorms swept Delhi on Thursday, and the India Meteorological Department put the capital region under an orange alert. Dark clouds covered the city through the day on October 15. The weather office warned of more showers, lightning and gusty winds into the evening and night, IANS reported.
The sharpest rain was expected in north and northwest Delhi. The department forecast moderate to intense rainfall there, with winds of 40 to 50 kilometres per hour and gusts up to 60. Other parts of the capital were set for lighter showers and thunderstorms.
A sudden turn in the weather
The rain broke a run of warm days. The maximum temperature was expected to stay around 29 degrees Celsius, lower than earlier in the week. The wet spell is tied to a western disturbance, a weather system that moves in from the west and triggers rain and storms across northern India.
The same system spread the rain wider. Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall was likely over Punjab on October 14 and 15, and over Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on October 15, the department said in its forecast carried by news agencies. Isolated hail was also possible in parts of the region on Thursday, Livemint reported from the same outlook.
What it means on the ground
Rain, lightning and gusty winds can slow traffic and flood low roads in the capital region, which includes Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad and Faridabad. The alert warned residents through the peak evening hours, when a heavy shower in Delhi quickly turns into long jams on waterlogged streets.
Delhi's rain also hit sport. Lightning suspended the first round of the DP World India Championship at Delhi Golf Club on Thursday morning, golf coverage reported, in the same storm system the weather office had flagged.
What happens next
The department forecast thunderstorms and rain in Delhi again on Friday, October 16. Conditions should turn drier from Saturday, October 17, with partly cloudy skies and a maximum near 32 degrees Celsius. Sunday, October 18, is forecast mainly clear, with daytime temperatures rising again.
For one day, at least, the capital's October heat gave way to a full monsoon style downpour, with an orange alert to match.
