Tamari Stroughter, 19, was sentenced on Monday in Franklin County Common Pleas Court to 36 to 40 years in prison for firing a rifle at Columbus police officers when he was 17. Judge Carl Aveni imposed the sentence. Stroughter pleaded guilty on Sept. 21, 2026, to felonious assault on a police officer and robbery in connection with the Jan. 9, 2025, incident, the Columbus Dispatch reported. He was tried as an adult.
The January 2025 shooting
Just before 11 a.m. on Jan. 9, 2025, Columbus police received a 911 call from a young woman in the 1100 block of Lockbourne Road who said her boyfriend, Stroughter, had a firearm and had threatened to shoot her, according to the Franklin County Prosecuting Attorney's Office. The woman had fled the area, but Stroughter remained at her mother's home.
When officers arrived at the house five minutes later, they found Stroughter armed with a rifle. He fired multiple times at the officers before running away, prosecutors said. Several officers joined the chase. At an alley west of Lockbourne Road and Kossuth Street, two officers encountered Stroughter, and he began firing his rifle again, striking their cruiser at least twice. Officers returned fire as he kept running. He tossed his rifle onto a nearby roof before he was taken into custody. No one was hit or injured by the gunfire.
Twenty counts, then a plea
A Franklin County grand jury indicted Stroughter on May 7, 2025, on 20 felony counts stemming from three separate incidents, including four counts of felonious assault from the January shooting, two counts of aggravated robbery from separate incidents, and one count of kidnapping. He was first charged as a juvenile. In April 2025, his case was transferred to adult court, where he was ordered held on $2.1 million bond. Prosecutors noted that Stroughter had been convicted as a minor in 2020 for robbery, which made it illegal for him to possess a firearm.
WCMH reported that Stroughter pleaded guilty and would spend up to 40 years in prison. The sentence handed down on Monday, 36 to 40 years, closes the case against the last of the gunfire that sent officers diving for cover on Lockbourne Road nearly two years ago. No officer was wounded in the shooting, a fact the court record returns to at every stage of the case.
