One person was killed on Wednesday morning in a shooting involving FBI agents who were serving a federal warrant in Dixmoor, Illinois, the FBI said. The FBI described the shooting as agent-involved and confirmed that one person died. The bureau said no FBI agents were injured and that there was no threat to the public. The Cook County Sheriff's Office confirmed that its personnel were assisting at the scene, and Dixmoor police were asked to hold a perimeter around the block while agents worked.
A loud start to the morning
FOX 32 reported that FBI agents, Cook County sheriff's deputies and other first responders were at the scene just after 7 a.m. Flash-bang devices were heard during the operation, along with screaming and crying. Responders were seen giving CPR to a person before that person was placed in an ambulance. Crews put yellow and red tape around the area, and some residents were visibly upset, yelling and demanding answers from officials.
What officials have not said
The FBI has not released the name of the person who was killed, has not said what the warrant was for, and has not explained what led to the gunfire. WGN reported that family members were mourning the man who died. No charges tied to the operation had been announced by Wednesday afternoon. Agent-involved shootings are reviewed by the FBI's Inspection Division under bureau policy.
The second FBI shooting in the Chicago area this week
Wednesday's shooting was the second fatal shooting involving an FBI agent in the Chicago area in three days. On Monday evening, an off-duty FBI agent driving home in a bureau vehicle fatally shot Oscar D. Isaya-Corrales, 27, near 18th Street and Union Avenue in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood. The FBI said the agent saw Isaya-Corrales firing at least two shots toward a group of people and intervened to stop the threat. On Tuesday, Chicago Alderman Byron Sigcho-Lopez asked the Illinois attorney general and the Cook County state's attorney to open an independent investigation into the Pilsen shooting. The Dixmoor shooting happened during a planned warrant operation, a different setting from the Pilsen encounter, and the two cases are not known to be connected.
