What the FBI said

The FBI's Chicago Field Office confirmed an agent-involved shooting near West 18th Street and Union Avenue. In a statement, the bureau said its Inspection Division is reviewing the incident in accordance with agency policy.

"The FBI takes all shooting incidents involving our agents or task force members seriously," the agency said. Federal officials declined to provide additional information on Monday night. They did not say what led to the shooting, which agents were involved, or whether any agent was injured.

Closures around 18th Street

Police closed nearby streets while investigators worked, and the southbound 18th Street exit was closed as well. The closures caused a major traffic backup on the Kennedy Expressway on Monday evening, according to local reports from the scene.

Officers at the scene were seen surrounding an electric or motorized bike in the street. Officials had not said whether the bike was connected to the shooting, and no agency had linked it to the person who was shot.

What is not yet known

No official account on Monday night explained what happened in the moments before the shooting. Authorities had not identified the person who was shot, and the fire department's confirmation was the only official word that anyone had been injured. WGN and CBS 2 also reported a large police presence in the area on Monday evening.

The FBI said the matter remains under review, and Chicago police said the investigation is ongoing. Drivers who use 18th Street and the Kennedy Expressway exit should expect the area around Union Avenue to stay restricted while investigators finish their work at the scene.
