The Denver Broncos beat the Arizona Cardinals 30-16 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale on Sunday in NFL Week 7. The win was Denver's third in a row and moved the Broncos to 5-2, while Arizona fell to 2-5.

Nix leads the way on the ground and through the air

Bo Nix ran for a 62-yard touchdown and gave Denver its biggest plays of the afternoon. He finished 15 of 29 passing for 222 yards and one touchdown, and he added 74 rushing yards on seven carries, including the 62-yard score. In total, Nix accounted for 296 yards from scrimmage, his season high.

Denver scored six points in the first quarter, seven in the second, 14 in the third and three in the fourth. Arizona scored six in the second quarter, seven in the third and three in the fourth, and the Cardinals were held scoreless in the first quarter. The gap came from Denver's ability to finish drives that Arizona could not.

Third quarter breaks the game open

The turning point came in the third quarter. Adam Prentice blocked a Cardinals punt, and Nix turned the short field into points with a 52-yard touchdown pass on a screen to RJ Harvey. Later in the quarter, Nix found Marvin Mims for 47 yards, a play that set up J.K. Dobbins for a 1-yard touchdown run on the final play of the third quarter.

Those plays were not isolated. Denver produced three of its four longest plays of the season in this game: the 62-yard run by Nix, the 52-yard touchdown by Harvey and the 47-yard catch by Mims. Wil Lutz added three field goals for Denver, giving the Broncos points on drives that did not reach the end zone.

Cardinals move the ball but stall near the goal line

Arizona had chances to stay closer. Tight end Trey McBride caught 10 passes for 111 yards and scored on a 7-yard touchdown pass from Jacoby Brissett. Chad Ryland kicked three field goals for the Cardinals.

The problem for Arizona was finishing close to the goal line. The Cardinals failed to score a touchdown on two first-half trips inside the Denver 10-yard line. Their final chance came in the last two minutes, when a drive reached the Denver 1-yard line. The Broncos defense held there, and Nix kneeled out the clock to close the win.

Injuries and the week ahead

Denver finished the game with two injury concerns. Wide receiver Jaylen Waddle hurt his chest late in the fourth quarter, and defensive lineman Zach Allen hurt his hamstring late in the fourth quarter. Neither player returned, and their status is a watch item before Denver's home game against the Kansas City Chiefs next Sunday.

Arizona also turns to a road game next Sunday, when the Cardinals play at Dallas. For Denver, the result keeps a winning run going at 5-2 heading into a home game against Kansas City. For Arizona, at 2-5, the loss was decided by missed chances inside the 10 and by a third quarter in which Denver scored 14 points.
