The remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time launched on Nintendo Switch 2 on Thursday, November 5, 2026, putting a rebuilt version of the 1998 Nintendo 64 classic at the centre of Nintendo's holiday season, two weeks before Grand Theft Auto VI arrives on November 19.
The remake is a ground-up rebuild, not a port. Nintendo has updated the controls, dialogue and graphics, and the new version carries reimagined visuals, a refreshed soundtrack and modernised gameplay, according to Nintendo's listing. The digital version costs $59.99 and the physical edition $10 more, according to Wccftech's roundup of the release details. CNN reported the digital version at $60 and the physical edition at $70.
A puppet-show look, on purpose
Series producer Eiji Aonuma and art director Aya Shida explained the remake's puppet-like art style in Nintendo's Ask the Developer interview, published on November 2, 2026. Gamereactor reported that Aonuma described the look as the work of a younger development team reacting to the 1998 original. Dot Esports, summarising the same interview, reported that the developers rebuilt Hyrule's look while keeping the structure of the original game, kept its map transitions, removed the old warp shortcuts and added the ability to jump anywhere.
The remake was developed in-house by Nintendo's Entertainment Planning and Development group, Dot Esports reported. TheGamer reported on November 6 that Aonuma told the young team not to get lost in the series timeline, which fans have debated for decades.
Nintendo's holiday bet
The launch is part of the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda series, which began in 1986. Nintendo launched a 40th anniversary edition Zelda-themed Switch 2 console in late October, and CNN reported it is currently sold out. A Zelda orchestra concert and a movie are planned for next year, CNN reported.
CNN, citing analyst Mat Piscatella of Circana, reported that the original Ocarina of Time is recognised as one of the best games ever made and that he expects most Switch 2 owners to buy the new version. Nintendo said in its most recent earnings report that Switch 2 hardware sales fell 34.4 percent year over year, CNN reported, after roughly 24 million consoles sold since the June 2025 launch. The remake is the release Nintendo is counting on to lift the console through the holidays, against the biggest game launch of the year two weeks later.
