Two people were killed and two others were taken to a hospital with serious injuries on Monday morning in a crash on Oracle Road north of Tucson, Arizona, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said.
Troopers placed the crash on southbound State Route 77, also called Oracle Road, at milepost 85 near Wilds Road in Pima County, just north of Oro Valley. DPS was notified around 6:15 a.m. on October 26, 2026. Both people who died were pronounced dead at the scene, DPS said.
What happened on Oracle Road
Local reports described a sedan that ended up wedged underneath one of the trucks involved, with the sedan driver killed. KGUN 9 reported the car was split in half and damaged so badly that its make was difficult to recognize. The Pima County Sheriff's Department assisted DPS at the scene, and troopers and the Pima County medical examiner were still there late that morning.
Reports differ on how many vehicles were involved. KGUN described two vehicles, a sedan and a commercial truck. KOLD, KVOA and the Arizona Daily Star described three vehicles, a sedan and two landscaping trucks, with KOLD attributing that description to DPS. No official account reconciling the two counts had been published in the reports checked, and DPS had not announced a cause.
Police and DPS have not released the names of the people who died or said which vehicles the second person killed and the two injured people were in, beyond the details below from the landscaping company.
A landscaping crew on its way to work
AAA Landscape said members of its Tucson crew were involved. The company said one of its employees was killed and two others were hospitalized. In the company's account, its crew was traveling to a job site when a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction lost control and collided with the crew's vehicle.
"There are no words that can adequately express the sorrow we feel," the company said. It said its employees are part of its family and that the loss affects everyone at the company. The company declined to release further details out of respect for the employees and their families.
The Arizona Daily Star reported that DPS could not confirm that the second person killed was a worker, even as the newspaper reported the company's statement that an employee had died. That question, along with the cause and the identities, remains part of the investigation.
Closure and reopening
Southbound Oracle Road was closed between Wilds Road and Golder Ranch Drive for much of the day on Monday. KOLD reported the closure was still in place early Monday afternoon, with drivers detoured to North Bowman Road and North Lago del Oro Parkway. KGUN reported the southbound lanes reopened around 2:30 p.m.
DPS had not announced a cause by the reports checked on Tuesday, and there was no verified update on the conditions of the two seriously injured people. The investigation remains open.
