A Texas couple has been charged in the freeway shooting of a 17-year-old Missouri high school student who was driving to a Halloween event at the St. Louis Zoo, authorities said at a news conference on Monday, Oct. 19.
The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's Office charged Willie Herndon, 42, of Arlington, Texas, with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the death of Alyssa Wilson. His wife, Taiya Herndon, 45, is charged with hindering prosecution. Prosecutors accuse her of driving her husband to a hotel in Illinois, about 12 miles from St. Louis, after the shooting.
Melissa Price Smith, the St. Louis County prosecuting attorney, announced the charges in Clayton with Major Case Squad investigators. It was not clear whether either Herndon has a lawyer.
One shot on Interstate 170
The shooting happened at about 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14. Wilson was driving south on Interstate 170 in Overland, northwest of St. Louis, on her way to Boo at the Zoo, the zoo's Halloween event, to meet a friend, said Jack Abell, chief deputy commander of the Major Case Squad.
Security video showed Wilson had just passed a white Buick Enclave stopped on the shoulder when a single shot was heard, Abell said. A person had stepped out and stood outside for a short time. After the shot, the person got back in, the vehicle turned off its hazard lights and drove on.
The round went through the rear of the red Buick Encore that Wilson was driving, Abell said. Her car crashed, and first responders found her with a gunshot wound. She was taken to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, where she was pronounced dead.
Investigators said the Herndons had no connection to Wilson. They have not shared a motive, and local reporting said there was no indication of road rage.
Tracked to a hotel in Illinois
Investigators used security video and license plate readers to track the Buick, which carried an out-of-state registration, Abell said. After long surveillance, the couple were taken into custody on Friday, Oct. 16, outside a hotel in Caseyville, Illinois. A court-approved search of their room found a gun and other evidence, and a shell casing found beside the freeway was sent for analysis. Abell said Willie Herndon, when interviewed, gave details about his involvement and about possible investigations in other areas, which are continuing.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, citing federal court documents, reported that Herndon is also a suspect in a shooting days earlier in St. Louis, when a car leaving Interstate 55 at Bates Street was hit by a single shot, and that he faces a federal charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Bond was set at 1 million dollars cash only for Willie Herndon and 500,000 dollars cash only for Taiya Herndon. Both were being held in Illinois while prosecutors sought their return to Missouri.
Sixty days from 18
Wilson attended McCluer North High School and was 60 days from turning 18, her father, Robert Hickman, said.
"Alyssa was 17, excited about her life, excited about her future," Hickman said, holding back tears. He said the family had been preparing to take its first vacation together, a trip to Disney World, so she could meet her favorite character, Princess Tiana from The Princess and the Frog.
"Unfortunately, she is not going to get to do that anymore," he said. "This was a senseless act."
The investigation is still open, and this story will be updated as court records and officials provide more detail.
