IMD Warns Tamil Nadu Faces Very Heavy Rain Oct 21-22

Key points

  • The India Meteorological Department forecasts isolated very heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on Wednesday, October 21, 2026 and Thursday, October 22, 2026.
  • The forecast matters because the northeast monsoon is active over southern India.
  • The department is watching two low pressure areas that may form at opposite ends of the Bay of Bengal.

The India Meteorological Department forecasts isolated very heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on Wednesday, October 21, 2026 and Thursday, October 22, 2026. The warning covers two days when rain is expected to be at its heaviest in coastal and delta districts that are already under alerts.

The forecast matters because the northeast monsoon is active over southern India. When that system is active, short spells of intense rain can fill drains, slow road traffic and disrupt daily work across low lying areas. District administrations, not weather models alone, will decide the local response in the hours ahead.

Two systems forming over the Bay

The department is watching two low pressure areas that may form at opposite ends of the Bay of Bengal. The first low is expected over the south-west Bay, adjoining the Tamil Nadu coast, on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, as a cyclonic circulation moves down to lower levels.

IMD numerical models point to a chance that one system could strengthen quickly into a tropical cyclone. The department has made no official call on that outcome yet. The European model had earlier put the formation over the south-east Arabian Sea instead, so the track is still open and forecasts may change as the systems develop.

That uncertainty is central to this story. A system that stays weak brings heavy rain. A system that strengthens faster could bring stronger winds and a different landfall risk. For now, the IMD has stayed with rain warnings and close monitoring.

Districts under warning on Tuesday

For Tuesday, October 20, 2026, district warnings covered heavy to very heavy rain in Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore and Villupuram, plus Puducherry and Karaikal.

Those districts include large parts of the Cauvery delta and the north Tamil Nadu coast. Farmers, fishing communities and commuters in those areas face the most direct disruption if the heaviest bands arrive as forecast on October 21 and October 22.

Kerala and neighbours also face heavy rain

Kerala also faces isolated heavy rain in districts including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam, with gusts of 30 to 50 kmph in thunderstorms.

Heavy rain is also expected this week in coastal Andhra Pradesh, Mahe and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The pattern is regional, not limited to one state, and it reflects the active northeast monsoon across the south.

What residents should watch

District collectors, not social media, decide school and college closures. Residents in delta and coastal districts should follow district administration updates for any closure, road or safety decision.

No closure, flood or damage beyond what the sources report should be assumed from this forecast. The next IMD updates will show whether the Bay systems strengthen, where they move, and whether the very heavy rain warning expands or narrows.
