Spencer Lee of the United States won the men's freestyle 57 kg gold medal at the 2026 Senior World Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan, on Sunday, November 1. Lee beat Roman Bravo-Young of Mexico by technical fall, 10-0, in the gold medal match. The final lasted 26 seconds. Lee scored with a single-leg takedown and followed with four leg laces to reach the 10 point margin that ends a freestyle match by technical fall.

A perfect run through the bracket

Lee finished the tournament with a 5-0 record. He recorded four technical falls and one win by fall, and he outscored his opponents 49-12 across the event. His road to the final began with an 11-0 technical fall over Edwin Segura Guerra of Guatemala. He then beat Milad Valizadeh of Iran 12-2 by technical fall and Abubakar Mutaliev of Russia 11-0 by technical fall to reach the semifinal.

The semifinal scare

The hardest match of his tournament came in the semifinal against Islam Bazarganov of Azerbaijan. Lee trailed 10-3 in the second period and was in danger of dropping out of the gold medal picture. He stepped over a gut wrench attempt by Bazarganov and secured a win by fall at 4:17 to reach the final. After that win on October 31, Lee told United World Wrestling, "I need to be better tomorrow." In the final a day later, he needed only 26 seconds to prove it.

The first Iowa champion since Gilman

The title is Lee's first Senior World championship. He is the first Iowa men's wrestling alum to win a Senior World or Olympic title since Thomas Gilman in 2021, according to Hawk Central. He is the seventh men's Hawkeye to win a Senior World championship, joining Gilman, Terry Brands, who won two titles, Tom Brands, Chris Campbell and Bill Zadick. The gold also marks a clear step up from last year, when Lee finished ninth at the Senior World Championships.

A career that pointed here

Lee won a Junior World title in 2016 and took Olympic silver at Paris 2024. The Senior World gold in Astana gives him the senior title that had been missing from that record. His five wins in Astana came by a combined 49-12 score, and four of the five ended early by technical fall. Only Bazarganov pushed him into the second period drama of the semifinal, and Lee finished that match by fall as well.

Bravo-Young makes Mexican history

Bravo-Young, a native of Tucson, Arizona, is a two-time NCAA champion for Penn State who wrestles for Mexico. He was the first Mexican wrestler ever to reach a Senior World Championships final, according to United World Wrestling. His silver medal came against the same Lee he had waited to meet in the final, and the match was decided in the opening seconds.

A second American gold in the same session

In the same session, Levi Haines of the United States won the men's freestyle 79 kg title, beating Mohammad Nokhodilarimi of Iran 4-3 in the final. That gave the United States two gold medals on the final day of the championships. The tournament concludes on Sunday at Barys Arena in Astana with the men's freestyle group three repechage and medal matches in the 57, 74, 79 and 92 kg classes.
