Updated 11:51 UTC: Sioux Falls police announced on Friday, October 30 that they had arrested Dominic Joshua Redowl, 18, of Sioux Falls, on two counts of aggravated assault in the Thursday stabbing outside the Bishop Dudley House, Dakota News Now and Sioux Falls Live reported. Police said the investigation remains ongoing. The original article below reported that officers had located a suspect nearby on Thursday but that no charges had been described at that time.

Two men were stabbed late Thursday morning in front of the Bishop Dudley House in downtown Sioux Falls, and police located the suspect a short time later a few blocks away, the Sioux Falls Police Department said.

Department spokesperson Sgt. Aaron Benson said officers received a call at about 11:20 a.m. from a 33-year-old man who reported that he had been stabbed in the neck after an altercation. The stabbing happened in front of the Bishop Dudley House, a nonprofit homeless shelter and support center near Eighth Street and Indiana Avenue, east of the downtown core.

A second man, 38, was also stabbed by the same suspect, Benson said. The suspect then got into an SUV and left the area.

Police set a perimeter, then clear the scene

Officers set up a perimeter on the south side of the shelter and asked people nearby to avoid the area while they searched, Benson said. No shelter in place order was issued. Officers on the scene told an Argus Leader reporter that there was no danger to the community.

A short time later, officers found the suspect near 12th Street and Melrose Place, Benson said. By 1 p.m., officers had left the scene and the perimeter was removed.

Both victims were taken to an area hospital for treatment. Police described their injuries as not life threatening. Police did not release the names of the victims or the suspect in the reports published on Thursday, and no charges were described in those reports.

Sioux Falls Live, which also covered the police response on Thursday, reported that officers had identified the suspect. The two local accounts agreed on the central facts of the morning: two men stabbed in front of the shelter, a suspect who drove away and was then found nearby, and a scene that was clear again by early afternoon.

Investigation continues

The Sioux Falls Police Department said the investigation is ongoing. The reports did not describe what started the altercation, what weapon was used, or whether the men knew each other before Thursday morning.

The Bishop Dudley House sits on the east side of downtown Sioux Falls and provides shelter and support services for people who are homeless. Police activity around the shelter drew officers and reporters to the Eighth Street corridor for about two hours on Thursday before the street returned to normal.

Anyone with information about the stabbing can contact the Sioux Falls Police Department.
