Four people were killed in overnight Russian strikes on Ukraine, Prime Minister Sergii Koretskyi said on Wednesday, Oct. 21. The attacks hit energy facilities in the Kyiv, Volyn, Odesa and Mykolaiv regions, he said on Telegram.

Police said two of the dead were in Kyiv, where a drone slammed into an apartment building. The other two were an 83-year-old man and an 81-year-old woman killed outside Kharkiv, in the northeast.

What was hit

Koretskyi said Russia struck power facilities in four regions and civilian enterprises in at least two others. A university building and a shopping centre in central Ukraine were also hit. Injuries were reported in the Poltava, Lviv, Cherkasy and Chernihiv regions.

Russia's defence ministry gave a different account. It said its forces hit a warehouse complex used for drone storage in Poltava, an electric power substation that supplies power to the defence and industrial sector and to logistics centres in Kyiv, and a ship carrying military cargo to Ukraine that was heading to the port of Odesa.

Why it matters

The strikes are part of a mounting Russian campaign against the Ukrainian energy grid as winter approaches. Moscow has hit power plants and transmission sites again and again in October. Each round leaves repair crews racing to restore heat and light before the cold sets in, and each round makes the next repair harder.

The attacks landed hours after President Donald Trump urged Kyiv to agree peace terms with Russia. Trump said on Tuesday that Moscow wanted to get a deal done. Relations between Washington and Kyiv have come under severe strain. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has reported a hiatus in advance warnings of missile strikes and limits on the Starshield satellite system his military uses.

What happens next

Repair work comes first. Ukrainian officials have not yet given a full count of homes left without power from this round. The diplomatic track also moves today. US envoy Steve Witkoff is due to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg and share ideas from his talks with Zelenskiy, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said. Kyiv wants faster air defence deliveries. Moscow shows no sign of pausing the energy campaign while talks run.
