Strikes were recorded at 25 locations, and debris from downed targets fell at eight locations, the Air Force said. Damage was reported in three districts of the capital.
In the Desnianskyi district, on the left bank of the Dnipro River, the attack damaged a private medical facility and a metro station, the Kyiv City Military Administration said on Telegram. A non-residential building caught fire there, and emergency workers found a body at the scene of the fire, Ukraine's State Emergency Service said, according to Ukrinform.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a woman was killed in the strike, which also damaged a 25-storey residential building, and put the first injury count at three other people, Reuters reported. The State Emergency Service later put the total at one person killed and eight injured. A Reuters witness heard explosions in the city overnight.
In the Dniprovskyi district, debris fell in open areas and damaged educational institutions and a sports facility, and debris also landed on non-residential buildings, the military administration said. In the Solomianskyi district, fire broke out on the third floor of a medical facility located in a 25-storey residential building, and emergency services put out the fire. The attack also damaged windows in nearby buildings and a shopping centre.
What Moscow says it hit
Russia's Defense Ministry said on Monday that it had carried out a massive strike overnight with ground-based high-precision weapons and strike drones, the Associated Press reported. Moscow said the targets hit in Kyiv included a data center, a logistics hub where components for drones and Flamingo cruise missiles are stored, an industrial facility making drone components and a locomotive depot where missiles are stored. It said a plant making polymer materials for the military industrial complex was also hit in the Kyiv region, and that its forces struck a bulk carrier at sea, 130 kilometres southwest of the Odesa port, which it said was carrying military and dual use cargo. Ukrainian reports described damage to medical, educational and residential buildings and a metro station, and did not confirm the Russian target list.
Why the warning system matters
The strike came after President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Sunday, October 18, that the United States had resumed sharing intelligence that helps Ukraine spot fast-moving ballistic missiles, after a brief pause. On Monday, October 19, in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, Secretary of State Marco Rubio denied that the sharing was ever paused. Ukraine relies on that intelligence to warn cities before missiles arrive, and Ukrainian officials had said some recent strikes came without warning.
