Police appeal for information
Assistant Chief Constable Claire Rukas, of Nottinghamshire Police, called the shooting a shocking incident. She said: "This is a shocking incident and a sobering reminder of the potential dangers faced by officers as they work to protect and serve the public."
Rukas said her thoughts were with the injured officer, his family and his colleagues. She asked anyone with information to share it without delay, saying even the smallest bit of information could make a difference to the investigation. Anyone with information can call 101 and quote incident 106 of October 18, 2026.
Sky News reported from the scene that police are understood to be aware of who the two people they are hunting are, while the investigation continues. Reporters at the scene described a substantial police presence across the city centre and around the cordon on Angel Row, near Long Row West and Beastmarket Hill. A photograph from the scene showed the recovered firearm lying in the street inside the cordon.
Rukas said officers were working to work out what happened and to catch the two people involved. She said: "As we investigate what happened and work to apprehend the individuals involved, my thoughts today are with the injured officer, his family and colleagues." The force has not released the officer's name or said how serious the foot wound is beyond confirming that he is being treated in hospital.
Angel Row is a short street at the edge of Nottingham's Old Market Square, lined with shops and fast food outlets, and it is usually busy from early in the morning. On Sunday it stayed empty behind police tape while forensic officers worked at the scene and detectives gathered camera footage from businesses nearby.
Reaction
The Police Federation of England and Wales said the shooting was a stark reminder of the dangers police officers face every day while protecting the public.
Officers were still hunting the two suspects on Sunday afternoon, and the cordon on Angel Row stayed in place. Police have not said what first drew the officer to the two suspects, and no arrests had been announced by Sunday afternoon.
