A former Douglas County sheriff's deputy who was fired in May after an internal investigation was arrested on Thursday by the Nebraska State Patrol, Sheriff Aaron Hanson said.

Nolan Dudik, 23, was taken into custody on Thursday, Hanson said in a video statement posted on Thursday, according to KETV. The arrest is the first criminal custody step reported in a case that has been public since the sheriff's office fired Dudik in the spring and released the findings of its internal investigation in July.

Dudik joined the Douglas County Sheriff's Office in 2023. In July 2025, he was assigned as a school resource officer at Westview High School in Omaha.

Fired in May after a cyber tip

The sheriff's office fired Dudik on May 5 after an internal investigation uncovered policy violations, WOWT reported. The case began after a cyber tip received by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children last December identified numerous images of potential child sexual abuse material linked to an iCloud account owned by Dudik, authorities said.

Sheriff Hanson ordered an internal investigation and placed Dudik on leave as soon as he learned Dudik was being investigated, the sheriff's office said.

When authorities released details of the firing in July, they said the allegations against Dudik included taking photographs of on-duty female deputies and manipulating the photos using artificial intelligence to generate nude images. They also said the allegations included taking photographs of juvenile female members of the sheriff's Explorer program at the Douglas County Law Enforcement Center and manipulating those photos in the same way.

The allegations released by the sheriff's office are accusations. They have not been proven in court.

Appeal, then an arrest

In July, Dudik appealed his firing to the Douglas County Sheriff's Merit Commission. He claimed the sheriff's office did not have sufficient evidence to support the termination and that his rights were violated. The commission agreed to work on setting a date between then and October to hear the appeal.

On Thursday, the case moved from an employment dispute to a criminal one, when the Nebraska State Patrol took Dudik into custody, according to the sheriff's announcement reported by KETV.

The sheriff's office is the county law enforcement agency for Douglas County, the county that includes Omaha.
