Australian author Craig Silvey, 44, was jailed on Monday for seven months after pleading guilty to distributing and possessing child exploitation material. The sentence was handed down in the Western Australia District Court in Perth on November 2, 2026. The seven month term was backdated to October 22, 2026, the date Silvey was jailed while he waited for sentencing. Court reporting said he is eligible for parole. The case closed a court process that began with a police raid on his home in Fremantle and an arrest in January 2026.

The sentencing was reported by AAP, the Australian wire service, and by BBC News reporting carried on Monday. Both reports placed the hearing in Perth and recorded the same sentence, the same backdating date and the same parole eligibility.

What the court heard

Police who raided Silvey's Fremantle home found numerous sexually explicit photos and videos of children and adults on his laptop and mobile phone, the WA District Court heard. Silvey was arrested in January 2026 after the raid.

Judge Hayley Cormann spoke directly about the harm during sentencing. “This offending involves children, and it is destructive, and it is devastating,” she said, in remarks reported by AAP. She also told him: “You acknowledge you have devastated and betrayed the trust of thousands of people, and you have let an entire community down.”

Two charges of producing and possessing further child exploitation material were dropped in May 2026. The sentence imposed on Monday followed his guilty plea to distributing and possessing child exploitation material.

A career in Australian books

Silvey is best known for Jasper Jones, his 2009 novel. The book has been described as a modern Australian classic. It was adapted into a feature film and into stage productions. He also wrote Runt, a children's novel that was also made into a film. His work brought major award attention. He was shortlisted for the Miles Franklin Literary Award and for the International Dublin Literary Award. Those books built a wide readership in Australia and placed his name on school and community reading lists before the charges changed his standing.

Publishers and reading lists

After Silvey was charged, his publishers Allen & Unwin and Fremantle Press stopped promoting his books. Most of his titles were removed from reading lists across Australia. The court outcome on Monday leaves the seven month sentence in place, with the term counted from October 22 and parole eligibility noted in court reporting from Perth.
