Oklahoma City police say an 18-year-old is in custody after a man was shot several times outside a First Citizens Bank branch in northwest Oklahoma City on Monday afternoon and died inside the bank. Officers responded just after 3 p.m. on Oct. 26 to the branch near North Pennsylvania Avenue and Northwest 122nd Street, after a call that was first reported as an armed bank robbery. News 9 reported on Tuesday morning, Oct. 27, that detectives had located the 18-year-old at a residence near Southeast 44th Street and Sooner Road and booked him into the Oklahoma County Detention Center on a first-degree murder complaint.
Police said the man was shot outside the bank and then went inside, where he died. News 9 reported that the shooting happened as the suspect tried to rob the man outside the branch, and officers stressed that the bank itself was not robbed. Sergeant Brett Like of the Oklahoma City Police Department put the distinction plainly in early reporting: "We received a robbery call with shots fired. Essentially, what we found out is that it is not a bank robbery. The altercation occurred outside of the bank."
How the early account changed
The first accounts from the scene described a different picture. Police initially said the shooting did not appear to be an armed robbery and appeared to be targeted, and that a white pickup truck in the bank parking lot was involved in the incident, without establishing whether the truck belonged to the man who was shot or to the shooter. KOCO reported that the search for the shooter was still under way on Monday evening, and police warned at that stage that the shooter was armed and dangerous.
By Tuesday the account had moved. News 9 reported that the suspect was attempting to rob the man when the shooting happened outside the bank, that police have not determined a motive, and that the shooting appears to be an isolated incident. FOX 25 reported the arrest was made on murder and robbery complaints. News 9 reported the booking as a first-degree murder complaint after the 18-year-old was interviewed by investigators.
The arrest across the city
Detectives located the suspect at a residence near Southeast 44th Street and Sooner Road, on the other side of the city from the bank, police said. He was suffering from a gunshot wound to the hand when he was taken into custody, received medical treatment, and was then interviewed by investigators before the booking, News 9 reported. KFOR reported separately on Tuesday that an 18-year-old had been arrested following the deadly shooting at the bank on Monday, matching the arrest account.
First Citizens Bank said the branch would remain closed on Tuesday and that counseling would be available, News 9 reported in its Tuesday roundup. Reports from the scene did not mention injuries to anyone else at the bank. Police have not said when formal charges will be filed, and the investigation is continuing.
