Tom Nolan beat Renato Moicano by technical knockout at 1:28 of the third round in the lightweight main event of UFC Vegas 123 on Saturday night at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas. The result will be argued about for a long time. Nolan won his sixth straight fight and his first UFC main event, but the finish came minutes after referee Dan Miragliotta stood the fighters up while Moicano held the strongest position in the fight.
Moicano controlled the first two rounds on the ground
Moicano, a former lightweight title challenger, spent much of the first two rounds on Nolan's back. He took the back more than once and worked for a choke while Nolan defended. On the feet, Nolan was the sharper striker, but Moicano kept closing the distance, taking the fight down, and slowing the pace from the top and from the back.
Late in the second round, Moicano again had Nolan's back, with a body triangle locked in. MMA Junkie reported that he had held that position for about two and a half minutes, landing punches while he looked for a choke opening. With about 90 seconds left in the round, Miragliotta stood both fighters up. Fighters, writers and fans reacted at once on social media, and several pros called the standup a serious error because Moicano was not stalling in a neutral position. He was in back control.
The fight changed in seconds
Once the fight was back on the feet, Nolan hurt Moicano with a knee and heavy punches near the end of the second round. Moicano reached the bell, but he came out for the third round still damaged. Nolan pressed him again, dropped him, took top position, and landed a run of unanswered punches and elbows on the ground. Miragliotta stopped the fight at 1:28 of the third round.
The official result moved Nolan to 12-1 in mixed martial arts and 6-1 in the UFC. Moicano fell to 21-8-1 overall and 13-8 in the UFC, at age 37, with three losses in his last four fights. In the co-main event, Jacobe Smith beat Randy Brown by unanimous decision, with all three judges scoring it 30-26.
Moicano took the loss in public, the debate went on
Moicano posted a short statement on X after the fight. He congratulated Nolan, thanked the fans, and blamed his own showing, saying he was well trained, got the back control, but could not do damage because Nolan defended well. MMA Junkie reported that it was not clear whether Moicano or his team would appeal the result over the standup. An appeal would face a hard road, but the argument after this card is not really about the record book. It is about a referee taking away a dominant position late in a round, and a fight turning on the next exchange.
