Nepal Telecom started selling a 30 Mbps fiber internet package for 4,999 rupees a year on Friday, October 16, the cheapest annual home internet offer in the country as private providers pull their low cost plans. The state owned company launched the new NT Fiber packages with WiFi 6 routers, effective from Ashoj 30 in the Nepali calendar.
The full annual price list runs in four steps. The 30 Mbps package costs 4,999 rupees a year. The 100 Mbps WiFi 6 package costs 11,499 rupees a year, the 150 Mbps package costs 12,999 rupees, and the 200 Mbps package costs 16,499 rupees. The three faster packages include internet and telephone service.
New subscribers on these packages pay no connection fee. The company waived the standard 500 rupee installation charge in full. Annual customers also get free mobile data of 800 to 1,000 MB a day, Nepal Telecom spokesperson Dr Kamal Lamichhane said, according to the launch reports. Each package runs for 12 months.
Why the timing matters
The launch lands in the middle of Dashain, when families are home together and data use climbs. It also lands against a price rise. Private internet providers in Nepal have announced the closure of affordable packages and raised other prices, Gothalo Khabar reported. Nepal Telecom, which is owned by the government, is moving the other way, opening a 30 Mbps tier to all users. The same 4,999 rupee offer ran earlier as a student package. It is now open to everyone.
For households outside the big cities, the math is the story. A year of home internet at 4,999 rupees works out to about 417 rupees a month, well below the monthly bills most private fiber plans now charge. WiFi 6 routers handle more devices at once with less lag, which matters in homes where phones, laptops and a television share one line.
What to check before you sign up
NT Fiber runs on the company's Fiber to the Home network, so the offer only helps where that network already reaches. Readers should check coverage at their address first, through a Nepal Telecom office or its service channels, before paying for a year in advance. The free installation and the daily mobile data bonus apply to the new packages announced on Friday, and the prices are annual, paid up front.
The package gives Nepali readers a rare piece of good price news this festival season, and it gives families in the diaspora a cheaper way to keep home connections live for parents and grandparents.
