Nashville SC beat FC Cincinnati 2-0 at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati on Saturday, on the final day of the MLS regular season. The win took Nashville to 77 points, a new MLS single-season points record. The old record was 74 points, set by Inter Miami in 2024. Nashville finished the regular season with 23 wins, 3 losses and 8 draws, and had already won the first Supporters Shield title in club history under head coach B.J. Callaghan, in his second full season in charge.
Surridge settles a tight game
The game stayed scoreless through the first half. Cincinnati had a goal by Tom Barlow called back for offside in the first half, and neither side scored before the break. Sam Surridge broke through in the 61st minute. Andy Najar sent a curling pass from just past midfield, and Surridge finished into the bottom left corner. Surridge scored again in the 86th minute, after Patrick Yazbek slotted him through on a breakaway. The two goals were his 20th and 21st of the MLS regular season, and they closed out the record on the road against the club Nashville had chased at the top of the Eastern Conference.
A season of records
The points record was one of several marks Nashville set this season. The club's 23 wins are a league record for a single season in the post-shootout era. Its 3 losses are the fewest in a single season, and its 25 goals conceded are also a league record low. Nashville equalled the league record with 17 clean sheets. MLS listed more records from the season: 15 home wins, 2.26 points per game, and a 13-point margin in the Supporters Shield race. Goalkeeper Brian Schwake kept 16 clean sheets, a joint league record. The designated player trio led the attack. Hany Mukhtar finished with 17 goals and 8 assists, Surridge with 21 goals and 2 assists, and Cristian Espinoza with 4 goals and 15 assists.
What comes next
Cincinnati finished with 46 points and a 12-12-10 record, as the No. 9 seed in the Eastern Conference. Cincinnati play Orlando City in the Eastern Conference wild-card match on Nov. 19 in Florida. Nashville will face the winner of that wild-card match in Round One of the MLS Cup Playoffs. The Tennessean listed Nashville's first-round series as starting Nov. 22 at GEODIS Park. Cincinnati get the first shot at the upset, in the wild-card game, and Nashville wait at home with the best regular season record MLS has seen.
