What the clip shows
The shows were phone free, with audience phones sealed in Yondr pouches. A clip of under a minute circulated on X on Saturday night. Consequence described it as low quality and apparently a recording of a screen, not the stage.
In the clip, Chappelle says: "I feel f--ked up saying this. It's scary being a public speaker. And I mean look, ever since that guy Charlie Kirk got murdered, and I shouldn't say this publicly but, I feel better."
He continued: "I know I shouldn't say that, but it's just a feeling. I didn't ask to feel this way." He said he would be driving around wondering why he was in such a good mood. Laughter and scattered applause followed in the room, the reports said.
The clip offers no further explanation. What came before and after the remark is not clear, and the wider context remains unclear.
A separate account from inside the room
Rob Henderson, a Manhattan Institute senior fellow who said he attended the Saturday show, posted his own account hours before the video surfaced. Henderson attributed these words to Chappelle: "I am so happy Charlie Kirk was killed. I cannot help it, it is involuntary." That line is Henderson's attributed account from the live show, not part of the circulated clip. Consequence reported that the video and Henderson's post were viewed nearly 7 million times.
The response
Erika Kirk responded on X. The Sun quoted her calling it "beyond disgusting" to see podcasters, comedians and commentators laugh about political assassination as though the destruction of a human life is a punchline.
She added that her husband was killed in an act of political violence that she and their two children will live with every day, and wrote: "A culture that laughs at assassination is one of profound moral decay."
The Sun noted that Musk shared a post pointing out that Kirk had defended Chappelle after Chappelle was attacked on stage by an armed man in 2022.
Kirk's killing and what Chappelle said before
Charlie Kirk, 31, founder of Turning Point USA, was shot dead on September 10, 2025, while speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. Tyler Robinson has been charged with his murder. The Sun reported that Robinson is awaiting a trial date after pleading not guilty.
Chappelle addressed Kirk's death in different terms in his December 2025 Netflix special The Unstoppable, saying the shooting had rattled him: "If you talk for a living and see Charlie Kirk get murdered that way, I am gonna be honest, I was shook." He also rejected comparisons between Kirk and Martin Luther King Jr. as a reach, noting both men were shot in the neck.
