Key points
- Elon Musk put another $77 million into America PAC, the super PAC he controls, in the first two weeks of October, according to Federal Election Commission filings reported by Bloomberg.
- The total already passes the roughly $290 million Musk spent in the 2024 election, and it leaves him as the top individual donor of the cycle by a wide margin.
- America PAC spent $43 million in the same two week period and ended it with $46.5 million in cash on hand, the filings show.
Elon Musk put another $77 million into America PAC, the super PAC he controls, in the first two weeks of October, according to Federal Election Commission filings reported by Bloomberg. The new money lifts his total giving in this election cycle to more than $445 million and makes him one of the biggest contributors to such groups in American history. Politico, which reported the filings on Thursday, put the October figure at $76 million and the cycle total above $442 million.
The total already passes the roughly $290 million Musk spent in the 2024 election, and it leaves him as the top individual donor of the cycle by a wide margin. Bloomberg noted that his giving runs well ahead of other major donors, including George Soros on the Democratic side and Republican backers Jeffrey Yass and Richard Uihlein.
Where the PAC money went
America PAC spent $43 million in the same two week period and ended it with $46.5 million in cash on hand, the filings show. Since August, the group has spent $43.2 million on canvassing and $8.8 million on digital media and texting services to reach voters, according to Bloomberg. Across the midterms as a whole, America PAC has spent $71 million to boost Republicans, with money spread over Senate races in Ohio, Michigan, Iowa and Maine and across more than 30 competitive House districts.
In Ohio, the group has spent $9.4 million on the Senate race between Democrat Sherrod Brown and Republican Jon Husted. In Michigan, it has spent $8.6 million on the race between Democrat Abdul El-Sayed and Republican Mike Rogers. Much of the spending pays for phone calls, text messages, mailers and door hangers in close districts.
Texas stays the biggest bet
Texas has drawn the largest share. America PAC has spent $33.1 million on the Texas Senate race between Democrat James Talarico and Republican Ken Paxton, the state attorney general. In September, Musk gave $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, the main super PAC backing Republican Senate candidates, and the fund transferred the money to Texas PAC, an affiliate focused on the Texas race, which has spent $181 million on the contest since September 11, Bloomberg reported.
Talarico has turned the spending into a campaign theme in the closing days. His campaign posted a one minute ad saying Musk's money was behind many of the attacks on him and accusing Musk of trying to buy his own senator. Musk has attacked Talarico on X, the platform he owns, calling the candidate a creep.
The wider money race
Musk's donations widen a Republican cash advantage that was already large. President Donald Trump, the Republican Party and its congressional super PACs raised $2.1 billion through the end of the third quarter, against $1.3 billion for the matching Democratic committees, Bloomberg reported. On the Democratic side, Michael Bloomberg contributed about $80 million in September and October to help Democratic candidates.
Musk also has business at stake in the outcome on November 3. His companies, including SpaceX, Tesla, the Boring Company and Neuralink, are heavily exposed to regulation by federal agencies, and a planned merger of SpaceX and Tesla will face regulatory scrutiny. His role leading DOGE, the effort to reshape the federal government, could come into focus on Capitol Hill if Democrats win control of the House, Bloomberg noted.
