MongolZ and MOUZ Reach IEM Beijing Final, NAVI and BetBoom Out

Key points

  • The IEM Beijing grand final is set, and it is not the one the bracket promised.
  • The MongolZ took the opener 13-10 and closed Inferno 13-11.
  • HLTV put the result in plain terms: this is The MongolZ's first Big Event grand final appearance in 14 months, and their first shot at a title since FISSURE Playground 2 last September.

The IEM Beijing grand final is set, and it is not the one the bracket promised. The MongolZ beat Natus Vincere 2-0 in Saturday's first semi-final, and MOUZ beat BetBoom 2-0 in the second. The final runs on Sunday in Beijing as a best of five. NAVI and BetBoom play the third-place match the same day.

The MongolZ took the opener 13-10 and closed Inferno 13-11. Garidmagnai "bLitz" Byambasuren led the series with 42 kills against 26 deaths and a 1.49 rating, according to HLTV's match report. NAVI got close twice. Ihor "w0nderful" Zhdanov dragged rounds back for the favorites, and NAVI's late comeback on Inferno made the last rounds tight. A Techno 1v2 clutch broke it, and another pistol round win at the start of the second half broke NAVI's economy when they could least afford it.

HLTV put the result in plain terms: this is The MongolZ's first Big Event grand final appearance in 14 months, and their first shot at a title since FISSURE Playground 2 last September. A Mongolian roster in a Big Event final is still rare enough to be the story of the weekend on its own.

MOUZ did it without dropping a map

The second semi-final was colder. MOUZ beat BetBoom 13-7 on Ancient and 13-8 on Mirage. BetBoom started Ancient 4-0 and still lost the map by six rounds. HLTV noted the veto risk BetBoom took: the first two maps were the same ones they lost when the teams met in the group stage. MOUZ read it, took both, and walked into the final as the only team yet to drop a map in Beijing.

That record is the sharpest contrast in Sunday's final. MOUZ have been the control team of this event: clean maps, no deciders, no mess. The MongolZ have been the momentum team, riding clutches and pistol rounds past the tournament favorites. One style has to give.

How they got here

The quarter-finals on Friday set this up. BetBoom beat FURIA 2-1 in an overtime decider, and NAVI reverse-swept PARIVISION 2-1, both reported by The Orbit Post as they landed. The MongolZ came through the group stage by beating FURIA, and MOUZ have not lost a series all week. Sixteen teams started in Beijing. Four are left standing for the final day.

What to watch in the final

The veto is the first battle. MOUZ will push the map pool toward the maps where their structure holds. The MongolZ need the pool wide and the rounds scrappy, the way the NAVI series went. Pistol rounds matter more than usual: The MongolZ built both map wins on them against NAVI, and MOUZ's clean record rests on never letting maps get loose.

There is also a ranking story. Beating NAVI moved The MongolZ past a team that started the week above them, and a title on Sunday would be the biggest result in Mongolian Counter-Strike history. MOUZ, for their part, get the rarest thing in this sport: a final they enter as clear favorites with their form still intact. Finals have a habit of testing exactly that.

The Orbit Post will publish the grand final result Sunday as it lands, with the third-place match between NAVI and BetBoom in the same report.
