Manchester City went top of the Women's Super League on Saturday, Nov. 7, beating West Ham United 5-0 at the Joie Stadium while Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw by Everton at Stamford Bridge. Khadija Shaw scored a hat-trick for City, and a Lucy Bronze own goal cost Chelsea the two points that would have kept them in first place, Reuters reported.

After nine games, City lead the standings on 25 points, two ahead of Chelsea. London City Lionesses are third on 16 points and host Birmingham City on Sunday.

Shaw scores three on her 150th City appearance

Shaw opened the scoring shortly before half time, turning in a finish at the end of a team move after City won the ball high up the pitch. She headed in her second soon after the restart from a Lauren Hemp cross, the ball going in despite West Ham goalkeeper Constance Picaud getting a touch that pushed it onto the crossbar. Aoba Fujino made it 3-0 on the hour, stealing possession inside the City half, running into the West Ham box and finding the bottom corner, after earlier hitting both the post and the bar. Substitute Iman Beney scored the fourth from the edge of the area off a Fujino pass, the shot taking a deflection. Shaw completed her hat-trick in the 74th minute from Grace Clinton's ball behind the defence, before being replaced by Risa Shimizu, who made her City debut.

City's own match report said it was the club's biggest win of the season, with five goals from ten shots on target. Sky Sports reported that Shaw's hat-trick was a perfect one, scored with her left foot, her head and her right foot, and took her to 12 league goals in eight starts this season. The Manchester City report put Shaw's total for the club at 132 goals in 150 appearances. Vavel reported that the hat-trick left Shaw three goals short of Vivianne Miedema's all-time Women's Super League record of 97 goals.

Bronze own goal costs Chelsea top spot

Chelsea led Everton after 28 minutes. Bronze headed the ball back across goal and Sandy Baltimore scored from close range. Five minutes later, Bronze tried to clear and the ball rolled into her own net, putting Everton level. Everton held on for the draw, and Reuters noted that Chelsea dropped points for the first time since the opening day of the season. Sky Sports reported that Everton did not manage a single shot on target of their own, with the own goal their only route onto the scoresheet.

What comes next

City have a short turnaround. They travel to Italy to face Inter in the Women's Champions League on Tuesday, then play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge next Saturday in a meeting of the top two. Chelsea's draw means that match now starts with City holding the two point advantage that Chelsea had carried into this weekend. West Ham remain near the bottom of the table after the heavy defeat, with Picaud's late save from Clinton, tipping the ball onto the post, the moment that stopped City adding a sixth goal in stoppage time.
