The Jefferson County Coroner's Office has identified the man who was found dead in a Louisville motel room after exchanging gunfire with Louisville Metro Police officers earlier this month. The coroner's office said Darryl A. Barnes, 30, died just before 1:30 a.m. on October 16, according to a release reported on Wednesday, October 28, by The Courier Journal and WDRB. His cause and manner of death are both listed as pending further investigation.

The identification closes the naming gap in a police shooting that started with a domestic violence call in the Jacobs neighborhood and ended, about an hour after a standoff began, with a SWAT drone finding Barnes dead inside a motel room near the Kentucky Exposition Center.

From Parthenia Avenue to a Phillips Lane motel

Louisville Metro Police Chief Paul Humphrey told reporters that officers responded around 11 p.m. on October 15 to a report of domestic violence involving shots fired in the 3600 block of Parthenia Avenue. Officers determined that no one was injured at the home, but the man involved had already left the area.

Investigators tracked the man to a motel in the 500 block of Phillips Lane, just west of the main gate to the Kentucky Exposition Center, where he was staying with a woman. Officers set up a perimeter around the room and tried for an extended period to persuade the man to come out.

The exchange of gunfire

Humphrey said the woman eventually exited the room. As she ran away, the man inside shot at the officers outside, and three LMPD officers returned fire. The three officers were later identified as Treyton Brown, Richard Waller and Jackson Evans.

After the exchange, the department's crisis negotiation team and SWAT team tried to communicate with the man inside. About an hour later, SWAT sent a drone into the room, and its images showed the man was dead. Humphrey said a preliminary investigation indicated the man had been shot at least once by officers and had also suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

WDRB reported that LMPD released the three officers' personnel records, which show letters of commendation for work helping victims of crimes and capturing violent suspects. The coroner's release on Wednesday gave the man a name, Darryl A. Barnes, and a time of death, just before 1:30 a.m. on October 16, but it did not settle how he died. The cause and manner of death remain pending further investigation, and the police account of the shooting remains the department's preliminary account, given by Chief Humphrey in the hours after the standoff.

For the Jacobs neighborhood and the streets around Phillips Lane, the case now moves from the standoff itself to the reviews that follow a fatal police shooting, with the coroner's final findings still to come.
