A 40 year old woman was killed and an infant was critically wounded in a shooting inside an apartment in the 7700 block of Willow Chase Boulevard in northwest Houston on Saturday evening, October 31, Houston police said. Officers who arrived found the suspected gunman dead inside the apartment.
What police say happened
Officers with the Houston Police Department responded to reports of a shooting at the apartment complex around 7:35 p.m., FOX 26 reported. According to police, the suspect arrived at the apartment to bring diapers to the 19 year old mother of his child. An argument broke out between the suspect and the 19 year old, and the suspect drew a firearm. Investigators said he shot the 19 year old's 40 year old mother in the back, then shot his infant child in the abdomen. The 19 year old mother was not injured, and she rushed the wounded infant outside the apartment to safety.
The response
Arriving officers found the suspect inside the apartment, dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. "Officers performed CPR on the 40 year old female victim and applied a chest seal before paramedics arrived," Houston Police Lt. Pulido said. Houston Fire Department paramedics took both victims to a nearby hospital. The 40 year old woman was pronounced dead on arrival. The infant remains in critical condition. KPRC 2 reported the same outline on Sunday: a Houston woman killed, an infant critically hurt in the shooting, and the suspect found dead.
The investigation
The Houston Police Department Homicide Division is investigating the shooting. Authorities have not released the names of the victims or of the gunman, pending family notification. Police did not give the infant's exact age in the first reports, and they did not name the hospital treating the child.
What is still unknown
The first reports did not say what the argument was about beyond the account police gave at the scene, and no further statement from the department had been published by Sunday morning. The infant's condition is the fact readers will look for first when police or the family speak again, and this article will be updated when officials release it.
