Cameron Boozer scored a career high 27 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the Memphis Grizzlies beat the Sacramento Kings 136-105 on Saturday night at FedExForum, improving to 6-0 and staying the only unbeaten team in the NBA.
Boozer, a rookie who was the third pick in last summer's draft, shot 8 of 14 from the field. Memphis became the last unbeaten team in the league on Friday night, when the Houston Rockets lost 116-111 at Dallas, and the Grizzlies protected that status with their most lopsided win of the young season.
Memphis pulls away in the third quarter
Memphis led 66-55 at halftime after leading by as many as 21 points in the first half. Sacramento cut into the lead before the break, but the third quarter settled the game. The Grizzlies outscored the Kings 42-25 in the period to lead 108-80, and the margin grew to 34 points in the second half.
The Grizzlies made 19 of 38 shots from 3-point range as a team, spreading the scoring across the rotation on a night when their starting point guard was a fill-in and two regulars sat out.
The bench takes over
Isaiah Stewart scored 24 points off the bench, making 8 of 9 shots in 21 minutes. The Memphis bench produced 81 points in all, a total that would have beaten Sacramento's starters on its own.
GG Jackson finished with 21 points and made all five of his 3-pointers. Cam Spencer started at point guard and recorded 10 points and 13 assists, running the offense without a drop in pace.
Memphis played without Ty Jerome and Scotty Pippen Jr., both out with back issues, and Quinten Post was also listed out in local coverage.
Acuff keeps Sacramento close early
Rookie guard Darius Acuff Jr. led Sacramento with a career high 38 points, including nine 3-pointers on 14 attempts. He scored 21 points in the first half, two nights after scoring 34 against New Orleans on Thursday, and he was the main reason the Kings were still within 11 points at halftime.
DeAndre Hunter finished with 19 points for Sacramento. Domantas Sabonis scored 11 points with 14 rebounds and eight assists, and Zach LaVine added 11 points. The Kings fell to 0-6, the opposite end of the standings from Memphis.
A start that matches team history
At 6-0, Memphis has matched the 2014-15 season for the best start in team history. The run has come with a rookie leading the scoring on Saturday, a bench outscoring the opponent's reserves by a wide margin, and two guards sidelined.
Both teams play again on Monday night. Sacramento visits the Dallas Mavericks, and Memphis hosts the New Orleans Pelicans at FedExForum.
