ROTTERDAM, Netherlands: Frederick Richard won the men's floor exercise title at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships on Saturday, scoring 14.633 points at Rotterdam Ahoy to take the first world title of his career. The 22 year old American finished 0.033 points ahead of Britain's Jake Jarman, the defending world champion, in a final that also included the last two Olympic gold medalists on the apparatus. Artem Dolgopyat of Israel took bronze with 14.466.
A title he called in advance
Richard, a University of Michigan graduate, had said on May 5 that he would win a gold medal at these championships, and he delivered in his last routine of the week, NBC Sports reported. "I hope this is a lesson to everybody that you don't have to wait to get the win to say you will be a champion," Richard said after the final. He is the first American man to win a world title on floor since Paul Hamm shared gold in 2003. The win adds a first global title to the bronze medals he won in the team and all-around events at the 2023 World Championships and in the team event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and it makes him the first American man since Danell Leyva to win medals in team, all-around and individual apparatus finals across the Olympic Games and World Championships.
Behind the medalists, Ryosuke Doi of Japan finished fourth with 14.366, and Carlos Yulo of the Philippines, second in qualifying with 14.500, finished eighth with 13.233 after a 0.3 penalty.
