Francis Duru, one of the defining faces of the Nollywood video film era, has died at 57 after a brief illness, his family announced in a statement posted on his official Instagram page.

"We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness. We appreciate your prayers, love, and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen," the family wrote.

Abubakar Sanusi Yakubu, the national president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, confirmed the death in a post mourning the actor. "Another great thespian is gone. Rest in peace, Francis Duru," Yakubu wrote. Seun Oloketuyi, the founder of the Best of Nollywood Awards, also confirmed the news in a short post, and colleagues and fans began posting tributes within hours of the announcement.

The role that made his name

Duru was born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents who came from Imo State in southeastern Nigeria. He went to primary and secondary school in Cameroon, then moved to Nigeria to study Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt, where he graduated in 1996.

He entered the film industry in 1989 with a part in Missing Mark, directed by Ndubuisi Oko. The role that made him a household name came in 1995, when he played Ahanna in Rattlesnake, the action film produced by Amaka Igwe. The film became a landmark of early Nollywood, and Ahanna stayed attached to Duru for the rest of his career. He went on to appear in well over a hundred films across three decades, moving between comedy, romance, and village dramas.

Guild leader, peace award, and charity work

Duru's standing in the industry went beyond his screen roles. In 2007 he received the United Nations Ambassador of Peace award for his positive influence on young people. In 2010 he was appointed interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, the same year he was nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the Africa Movie Academy Awards. A decade later, in 2020, he won Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) at the Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa.

He also worked with aid and development groups, including UNICEF and USAID, on programs aimed at better education and living standards for African children.

A loss he had already carried

Duru married Adokiye, whom he met at the University of Port Harcourt, in 2003, and they had four children. Two years ago he lost his 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, and spoke openly about the grief in posts that many fans answered with their own stories of loss.

His death came only months after he had to push back against rumours about his health. In June 2026, Duru publicly dismissed claims that he was terminally ill after a video showing him looking frail circulated online. He had also denied false reports of his own death in earlier years, a history that left some fans slow to believe Thursday's announcement until the guild president and the family both confirmed it.

What happens next

No funeral arrangements had been announced by the family as of the confirmation. The Actors Guild of Nigeria is expected to lead the industry's formal tributes, and colleagues across Nollywood and the wider African film audience in Ghana and beyond have continued to post remembrances of the actor they knew first as Ahanna.
